Technomancer is a studio album by American electronic musician Pictureplane. It was released by Anticon on October 30, 2015. [3] Music videos were created for "Self Control", [4] "Technomancer", [5] "Death Condition", [6] and "Joyrider". [7]

Production

Most of the album was created using the Access Virus synthesizer. [8] Pictureplane also used an old desktop computer. [8] Brad Hoss, Dre Skull, D Gookin, and Lars Stafford helped engineer the album. [8] "Self Control" and "Live Forever" featured guest vocalist Grace Hall. [9]

Pictureplane described it as "an album about our current relationship with technology and how it is defining our existence right now." [8] The title of the album refers to "someone who uses technology for magical purposes." [10]

Derek Staples of Spectrum Culture gave the album a 2.75 out of 5, calling it "an amalgam of androgynous lyricism, shoegaze electronics, second-wave acid techno and downtempo darkwave." [13] Matt James of PopMatters gave the album 7 stars out of 10, saying: "It's anarchic, noisy, sweaty, somewhat scrappy at times, but a ton of fun." [12]

Writing for Under the Radar , Tamaryn included it on her "Top 12 Albums of 2015" list. [14]

Pictureplane

Travis Egedy, better known by his stage name Pictureplane, is an American electronic musician, visual artist and fashion designer based in Brooklyn, New York. He first appeared in the music scene of Denver, Colorado, making a name for himself at Rhinoceropolis, the DIY space where he also lived. He has been credited for coining the term "witch house". He is also a founder of the fashion brand Alien Body.

Recording sessions took place at Record One in Sherman Oaks and at Effigy Studios in Michigan. Produced by Dem Jointz and Focus..., the song features vocals from fellow American rapper Eminem, South African singer Candice Pillay, and American recording artist Anderson .Paak, with additional vocals from Sly Jordan.

Derek Ali

Bill Hare is an American Grammy Award-winning audio engineer known for pioneering contemporary recording techniques in a cappella. He was the first to record voices individually, and the first to mic singers exactly as one would mic instruments. Over the course of his career, Hare has become well known for his outsize role in shaping the sound of recorded a cappella. Industry observers have called him the "patriarch" and "the Dr. Dre" of a cappella recording. Deke Sharon, founder and longtime president of the Contemporary A Cappella Society, wrote of Hare's influence in 2018: "The sound of contemporary recorded a cappella owes more to his technique, style, and pioneering than any other person."
