This was the first ever Commonwealth tournament held, and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, the top seed, won the gold medal by defeating India's Sania Mirza in the final. Australia's Sally Peers won the bronze medal.

Sally Peers is an Australian former professional tennis player. Her career-high singles ranking by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is 145, which she achieved on 11 April 2011. Her highest doubles ranking of world No. 89 she reached on 8 November 2010. Her career high in juniors is world No. 54, achieved on 21 July 2008.

This was the first edition of tennis at the Commonwealth Games. The competition was won by top seed, Somdev Devvarman of India, who beat Greg Jones of Australia 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

This was the first ever Commonwealth tournament held, and Anastasia Rodionova and Paul Hanley of Australia were the top seed. However they lost the final to Jocelyn Rae and Colin Fleming of Scotland 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko were the defending champions but Azarenka chose not to participate in doubles this year.
Kirilenko played with Nadia Petrova but lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. Vinci and Errani won the title after defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final by 6–1, 3–6, [10–4] to win their first ever WTA tier I tournament.

Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai were the defending champions, but lost to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round.

Jelena Janković and Katarina Srebotnik were the defending champions, but they chose not to compete together. Janković played alongside Klára Koukalová, but lost in the second round to Michaëlla Krajicek and Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová. Srebotnik teamed up with Květa Peschke, but lost in the second round to Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan.

Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova were the defending champions, but they chose not to participate together this year. Kudryavtseva played with Alexandra Panova, but lost in the quarterfinals to Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki. Rodionova played with Arina Rodionova, but lost in the quarterfinals to Hsieh Su-wei and Sania Mirza.
Hingis and Lisicki won the title, defeating Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik in the final, 6–2, 7–5.

Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova were defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Rodionova partnered up with her sister Arina, but they lost in the quarterfinals to Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro. Kudryavtseva played alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, but they lost in the semifinals to Muguruza and Suárez Navarro.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová were the defending champions, but Šafářová withdrew before the tournament due to a bacterial infection. Mattek-Sands played alongside Sabine Lisicki, but lost in the second round to Anastasia and Arina Rodionova.

Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza were the defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Hingis played alongside CoCo Vandeweghe, but lost in the second round to Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua. Mirza teamed up with Barbora Strýcová, but lost in the third round to Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato.

Chuang Chia-jung and Darija Jurak were the defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Chuang played alongside Zheng Saisai, but lost in the first round to Gabriela Dabrowski and Jeļena Ostapenko. Jurak teamed up with Anastasia Rodionova, but lost in the second round to Dabrowski and Ostapenko.
