Tesfaye Geleta Urgessa (born 1983) is an Ethiopian painter. He is from Addis Ababa and is based in Germany. [1] [2] [3]

Career

Tesfaye Urgessa studied under Mezgebu Tessema, Tadesse Mesfin and Bisrat Shibabaw [1] in Ethiopia. He graduated from the Ale School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa in 2006, and the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in 2014. [2]

Urgessa was taught by professors who had studied art in Russia in the 1970s and 1980s, when the dominant art movement was socialist realism. [3] [ better source needed ] Their focus was on the study of anatomy, which influenced Urgessa’s style. [3] [ better source needed ]

At this time, through internet research, Urgessa's practice was inspired by prominent artists in Europe including Picasso, Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. [3] [ better source needed ]

Themes

Tesfaye Urgessa’s images have themes of racism, class, policy brutality, injustice in politics and power. [3] [ better source needed ] He combines traditional figuration with Ethiopian iconography, Cubism, and 1980s German Neo-expressionism. [4]

Exhibitions

Urgessa exhibited in "Oltre/Beyond" at The Uffizi Gallerie in Florence in 2018, [5] and again in 2021. [6] The Uffizi also hosts his work in its permanent collection, and "Von Denen Die Auszogen" at State Galerie Villa Streccius, in Landau Germany in 2019. [4]

Urgessa will represent Ethiopia at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2024, the first time that the country will be participating with a national pavilion. [7]

The Cinema of Ethiopia and the film industry in general are relatively recent phenomena in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian film industry is growing but faces many problems that have prevented it from fully flourishing. Historically, live stage theater enjoyed more popularity in Ethiopia, creating a handful of relatively successful stage actors. Ethiopian films began modernizing in the 2000s, implementing Amharic, but due to wide home video and DVD distribution, they are often frustrated by copyright infringement in the presence of piracy. Debo Band are a Boston-based Ethiopian music band led by saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Ranging from 10–12 members playing horns, guitars, violins, percussion, and accordion, their sound incorporates Ethiojazz, folk, and pop styles from the Horn of Africa infused with tinges of motifs from Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as punk, experimental, and psychedelic rock. Tesfaye Sahlu also known as Ababa Tesfaye, was an Ethiopian comedian, children's storybook author, and former singer. He provided entertainment for the Ethiopian troops of the Kagnew Battalion serving in the Korean War. He received awards from Emperor Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian Fine Art and Mass Media Prize Trust. He was most widely known for his children's television program on the Ethiopian national broadcaster EBC, where he coined the catchphrase, "Lijoch Yezare Abebawoch Yenege Freywoch".

Selam Tesfaye is an Ethiopian film actress. Her roles often placed her as a leading actress in various films. As recipient of multiple awards, notably Gumma Film Awards, she is one of the most popular icon in the Ethiopian film industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Ethiopia was a part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Ethiopia on 13 March 2020. The national government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, declared a five-month state of emergency in April 2020 but has allowed economic activities to continue during the public health crisis.

She also served as an Executive Director at the University of Michigan's Center for International Reproductive Health Training (CIRHT) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a CEO and Vice Provost in St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in Addis Ababa and as a Project Director of USAID's Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) at Jhpiego-Ethiopia.

Zenebework Tadesse is an Ethiopian sociologist and activist. She is the first executive director of AAWORD.

The Gumma Film Awards is an Ethiopian domestic film award held in Addis Ababa annually since 2014. Created by film director Yonas Berhene Mewa, the award programme broadcast through some television stations. Gumma rewards acclaimed domestic Ethiopian films.
