Teuku Mohammad Hamzah Thayeb (born 31 May 1952) is an Indonesian diplomat. He was Ambassador of Indonesia to Australia between 2005 and 2008 and Ambassador of Indonesia to the UK between 2011 and 2015.
Born on 31 May 1952 in Paris,France,Hamzah was educated at Jayabaya University in West Java. [1] He started his career as a public relations officer at the national secretariat of ASEAN in 1975. [2]
From 2005 to 2008,Hamzah was Ambassador of Indonesia to Australia. In March 2006,Hamzah faced protests from Papuan and refugee activists over the West Papuan refugee crisis. The Indonesian Government guaranteed the Papuan's safety and Hamzah said he did not understand why the West Papuans had sought asylum to begin with. [3] Hamzah was temporarily recalled to Indonesia when the Australian Government granted the Papuans asylum. [4] He arrived back in Canberra in June 2006.
In 2012,he was part of the State visit of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the United Kingdom. He was appointed an Honorary Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. [5] In 2013,Hamzah was named 'Diplomat of the Year from Asia 2013' by The Diplomat ,whilst serving as Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland. [6] His father Hadi Thayeb had also been the Indonesian ambassador to the UK and Ireland,in the early 1990s. [7]
The Free Papua Movement or Free Papua Organization is a name given to independence movement based on Western New Guinea,seeking the secession of the territory currently administrated by Indonesia as the provinces of Central Papua,Highland Papua,Papua,South Papua,Southwest Papua,and West Papua,also formerly known as Papua,Irian Jaya and West Irian.

The Trisakti shootings,also known as the Trisakti tragedy,took place at Trisakti University,Jakarta,Indonesia on 12 May 1998. At a demonstration demanding President Suharto's resignation,Indonesian Army soldiers opened fire on unarmed protestors. Four students,Elang Mulia Lesmana,Heri Hertanto,Hafidin Royan,and Hendriawan Sie,were killed and dozens more were injured. The shootings caused riots to break out throughout Indonesia,eventually leading to Suharto's resignation.

He is a former political prisoner who took on the Indonesian government and almost cost him his life. Mr. Wainggai escaped to Australia,where he lived briefly before traveling to the United States where he resides today. He is known to many in Australia and the world as the man who escaped on a canoe to Australia in 2006.

The 2019 Papua protests were a series of protests by Papuans in Indonesia that began on 19 August 2019 and mainly took place across Indonesian Papua region in response to the arrests of 43 Papuan students in Surabaya,East Java for alleged disrespect of the Indonesian flag. Many of the protests involved thousands of participants,and some grew from local protests in Surabaya to demanding an independence referendum for the whole region. In several locations,the protests turned into general riots,resulting in the destruction of government buildings in Wamena,Sorong and Jayapura. Clashes between protesters and police resulted in injuries,with over 30 people killed from both the clashes and the rioting.
