Texas Southern University is a public historically black university in Houston, Texas. The university is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Cynthia Lynne Cooper-Dyke is an American basketball coach and former player who has won championships in college, in the Olympics, and in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is considered by many as one of the greatest female basketball players ever. In 2011, Cooper-Dyke was voted by fans as one of the Top 15 players in WNBA history. Upon the league's formation, she played for the Houston Comets from 1997 to 2000, being named the Most Valuable Player of the WNBA Finals in all four seasons, and returned to play again in 2003. Cooper-Dyke still holds the record for most Finals MVPs with four. On April 30, 2019, she was introduced as the head coach for the Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball team, a position she held in the 2012–13 season. She has also coached at USC, UNC Wilmington, Prairie View A&M, and, professionally, for the Phoenix Mercury. Cooper-Dyke was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

The program's first season was 1965, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference since the start of the 1999 season. Its home venue is MacGregor Park, owned by the city of Houston. Michael Robertson is the team's head coach starting in the 2009 season. The program has appeared in 5 NCAA Tournaments. It has won five conference tournament championships and no regular season conference titles. As of the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season, no former Tigers have appeared in Major League Baseball.

The 2020–21 Texas Southern Tigers basketball team represented Texas Southern University during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Tigers were led by third-year head coach Johnny Jones and played their home games at the Health and Physical Education Arena in Houston, Texas, as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They finished the season 17-9, 11-3 in SWAC Play to finish in 3rd place. They defeated Alcorn State, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M to be champions of the SWAC tournament. They received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Mount St Mary’s in the First Four before losing in the first round to Michigan.
Robert Earl Moreland was an American college basketball coach. He served as the head coach of the Texas Southern Tigers from 1975 to 2001, and as interim head coach during the 2007–08 season. Moreland has the most wins as a coach in Tigers history with 406. Moreland led the Tigers to a NAIA championship in 1977 and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year five times.
