Thaumatodryinus tuukkaraski is a wasp species in the family Dryinidae. This tiny insect is endemic to Kenya where it is only known from the Taita Hills. [1] [2] In 2015, this newly discovered species was named in direct reference to the Boston Bruins (NHL) goaltender, Tuukka Rask. [1]
The specific name tuukkaraski is in direct reference to the Boston Bruins (NHL) goaltender, Tuukka Rask. The reasoning given by the authors was that "[t]his species is named after the acrobatic goaltender for the Finnish National ice hockey team and the Boston Bruins, whose glove hand is as tenacious as the raptorial fore tarsus of this dryinid species”. The species was described based on a single specimen collected with a Malaise trap at 2,162 m (7,093 ft) above sea level in Vuria Forest, Taita Hills, just inside an indigenous forest. [1] Its ecology, including the host species, is otherwise unknown. [1] [2]
The species description is based on a single female, the holotype, now stored in the collections of the National Museums of Kenya. The first pair of legs have enlarged claws referred to in the naming of this species. However, the claw is still tiny, less than 0.4 mm (0.016 in) long, as Thaumatodryinus tuukkaraski is a small species measuring only 3.4 mm (0.13 in) in length. The occipital carina is incomplete. The antennae are clavate. The wings are fully developed; the forewings have a transverse band whereas the hindwings are hyaline. The body is mostly black, with some testaceous or brown parts. The legs are testaceous-whitish except for the clubs of femora that are brown. [1]
Cecil Ralph "Tiny" Thompson was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. He played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), first for the Boston Bruins, and later for the Detroit Red Wings. A four-time Vezina Trophy winner, Thompson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1959. He was a member of one Stanley Cup-winning team, as a rookie in the 1928–29 season with the Boston Bruins. At the start of the 1938–39 season, after ten full seasons with Boston, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he completed the season, and played another full one before retiring. During his NHL career, he recorded 81 shutouts, the sixth highest of any goaltender. After retiring from playing, he coached lower-league teams before becoming a noted professional scout. Thompson helped popularize the technique of the "glove save" which was catching the puck with his hands as a method of making a save. A competent puckhandler, he was the first goaltender in the NHL to record an assist in 1936 by passing the puck with his stick to a fellow player.
Tuukka Mikael Rask is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender, for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Rask was drafted 21st overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rask won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender during the 2013–14 season. In 2011, Rask won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins. He is the older brother of Joonas Rask, who plays professionally as a forward with HIFK in the Finnish Liiga.
