The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired by Album is the companion album to the 2016 movie The Birth of a Nation . It was released on Atlantic Records on September 30, 2016, one week prior to the film's theatrical release. [1]
The album was curated by the film's star and director Nate Parker, Atlantic Records CEO Craig Kallman, and Atlantic Records President of Film & Television Kevin Weaver as a platform for lyrical content inspired by the film's protagonist Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher from Virginia who led a rebellion against slave owners. [2] [3] It features a number of prominent R&B and Hip-Hop artists, including Vic Mensa, Nas, Wale, The Game, K. Michelle, Ne-Yo, Pusha T, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and Lecrae.

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, better known by his stage name Nas, is an American rapper. Rooted in East Coast hip hop, he is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Jones began his musical career in 1989 as he adopted the moniker of "Nasty Nas" and recorded demos for Large Professor. Nate Parker is an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. He has appeared in Beyond the Lights, Red Tails, The Secret Life of Bees, The Great Debaters, Arbitrage, Non-Stop, Felon, and Pride. Parker's directorial debut feature film, The Birth of a Nation, in which he also starred, made history at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival when Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired the distribution rights for $17.5 million, breaking the record for the most paid for a Sundance Film Festival production, surpassing Little Miss Sunshine, which had been acquired by Searchlight for $10 million ten years earlier. Recording sessions for the album began in late 2008, shortly after Lil Wayne's sixth studio album, Tha Carter III (2008) was released to strong sales and critical acclaim: however, the sessions were put on hold, as Lil Wayne claimed he did not want to follow an album he held in high regard so quickly with another, potentially inferior release. The second bonus track on the deluxe edition of Tha Carter IV (2011), was released to Urban contemporary radio stations as the sixth and final single on September 13, 2011, through Young Money, Cash Money, and Universal Republic Records. The artists wrote the song alongside Phillip Lawrence and producer REO of the Soundkillers, with co-production from the Smeezingtons. The song leaked online a few days before the album's official release in the United States. The track was produced three years before its release. Owen, with Mike Caren's help, was able to get the track to several rappers, who rejected it. Lil Wayne liked the song after hearing it, however, and his verses were added to Mars's hook vocals already on the track.
