Scott Yanow in his review for AllMusic stated, "A very emotional improviser (whose unexpected explosions of sound sometimes punctuate otherwise introspective performances), Blake is a true original. This Milestone LP, only his third recording in eight years, shows Ran Blake really finding unusual things to say on a variety of standards... On this solo piano date, Blake makes political (if nonverbal) statements on many of these pieces, improvising off of the titles rather than the chord changes". [2]

Cecil Percival Taylor was an American pianist and poet.
"Giant Steps" is a jazz composition by American saxophonist John Coltrane. It was first recorded in 1959 and released on the 1960 album Giant Steps. The composition features a cyclic chord pattern that has come to be known as Coltrane changes. The composition has become a jazz standard, covered by many artists. Due to its speed and rapid transition through the three keys of B major, G major and E♭ major, it has been described as being "the most feared song" and "one of the most challenging chord progressions to improvise over" in the jazz repertoire.
Saxophone Colossus is the sixth studio album by American jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Perhaps Rollins's best-known album, it is often considered his breakthrough record. It was recorded monophonically on June 22, 1956, with producer Bob Weinstock and engineer Rudy Van Gelder at the latter's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. Rollins led a quartet on the album that included pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Max Roach. Saxophone Colossus was released by Prestige Records to critical success and helped establish Rollins as a prominent jazz artist.
Richard Hyman is an American jazz pianist and composer. Over a 70-year career, he has worked as a pianist, organist, arranger, music director, electronic musician, and composer. He was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters fellow in 2017. His grandson is designer and artist Adam Charlap Hyman.
Piano Improvisations Vol. 1 is the seventh solo album by Chick Corea, recorded and released in 1971 by the Munich based German record company ECM. It features solo performances on acoustic piano and was recorded over the course of two days in Oslo, Norway. These sessions also produced the subsequent Piano Improvisations Vol. 2. These two albums served as a bridge of sorts between Corea's experimental acoustic works in Circle and his more accessible work with Return to Forever.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow states "McCoy Tyner is featured in one of his strongest groups... A transitional set between Tyner's adventurous Milestone albums and his current repertoire... The album was recorded live at Sweet Basil in New York City on March 25–26, 1977. Piccolo is considered one of Ron Carter's best albums from the late 1970s due to its excellent recording, live-club feel, and exquisite musicianship.
