The Dark Hereafter is the fifth studio album by the English black metal band Winterfylleth, released on 30 September 2016 through Candlelight Records.
The Dark Hereafter is the fifth studio album by the English black metal band Winterfylleth. It consists of five tracks of which three are new. "Pariah's Path" had been a bonus track in the digipak version of the band's previous album, The Divination of Antiquity . "Led Astray in the Forest Dark" is a cover and English translation of Ulver's song "I troldskog faren vild" from the 1995 album Bergtatt – Et eeventyr i 5 capitler . [1]
It was a deliberate choice to have fewer but longer songs than on previous albums, allowing Winterfylleth to write songs with more layers and build-up over time. The tracks are less influenced by folk music than usual for Winterfylleth, although this was not a conscious choice. It was Winterfylleth's first album with the guitarist Dan Capp who replaced Mark Wood. [2]
Candlelight Records released The Dark Hereafter on 30 September 2016. [3] The cover art, designed by Capp, features a photograph taken by Winterfylleth's drummer Simon Lucas, depicting a misty mountain area. The band chose a darker image than usual to reflect brooding messages and subtexts in the songs. [4]
In The Quietus , Pavel Godfrey wrote that The Dark Hereafter, with its low number of tracks, is reminiscent of an extended EP, which may be the result of a hectic and prolific period for Winterfylleth. He described the track "The Dark Hereafter" as a distillation of the strongest parts of the earlier albums The Threnody of Triumph and The Divination of Antiquity . Godfrey wrote that the Ulver cover is played "too straight" to change how the song is perceived, but Winterfylleth's choice to associate itself with Ulver changed how he viewed the band and its influences. [5] According to Joe DiVita of Loudwire , the album contains "'gotcha!' moments", such as when he thought the title track was about to move into shoegaze, but surprised him with "a monstrous pick scrape followed by another round of blasts". [6]
David Oberlin wrote in Soundscape that the longest tracks, "Pariah's Path" and "Green Cathedral", create a trance-like effect. He wrote that the Ulver cover was a disappointment, but that the new songs "are killer and have an airier tone". [1] Jan Wischkowski of Metal.de wrote that the first three tracks would have been enough to make The Dark Hereafter a good album, but the main stand-out track is the fourth, "Green Cathedral", which he described as an "incredibly intense listening experience" due to its "leisurely tempo, great leads and highly emotional vocals". Gylve Fenris Nagell, known professionally as Fenriz, is a Norwegian musician, part-time music journalist and online radio host who is best known as being one half of the black metal duo Darkthrone, alongside Nocturno Culto. Although primarily a drummer and songwriter, he has also played bass and guitar and performed vocals for Darkthrone and several other metal bands. Fenriz is famed for his encyclopedic knowledge of metal music, his eager promotion of underground bands and the DIY ethic, and his rejection of the "showbiz side of the music industry". Fenriz was also the studio drummer for doom metal band Valhall, and has had several solo projects, including the folk black metal project Isengard and the dark ambient project Neptune Towers.
Chevelle is an American rock band formed in Grayslake, Illinois, in 1995. The band was originally composed of two brothers, Pete Loeffler and Sam Loeffler, along with Matt Scott. Scott was replaced by Sam and Pete's brother, Joe Loeffler, in 1996. When Joe left the band in 2005, Geno Lenardo subbed in as the touring bassist until he was replaced by Pete and Sam's brother-in-law, Dean Bernardini. Bernardini departed from the band in 2019, and in 2021, Kemble Walters joined the band as a touring bassist.
Ulver is a Norwegian experimental electronica band founded in 1993, by vocalist Kristoffer Rygg. Their early works, such as debut album Bergtatt, were categorised as folklore-influenced black metal, but the band has since evolved a fluid and increasingly eclectic musical style, blending genres such as experimental rock, electronica, ambient, trip hop, symphonic and chamber traditions, noise, progressive and experimental music into their oeuvre. 1997 marked their international debut with the release of their third album Nattens madrigal through German label Century Media. However, following discord with the label, Rygg formed his own imprint, Jester Records, in 1998.
Bloody Kisses is the third studio album by the American gothic metal band Type O Negative and the last recording with their original lineup, as drummer Sal Abruscato left the group in late 1993 to join labelmates Life of Agony. Heidi Solberg Tveitan is a Norwegian musician and singer currently known for her solo project Starofash. Tveitan was formerly half of the experimental band Peccatum, where she performed vocals, keyboards and synths and wrote the majority of lyrics, under the name Ihriel. Since their inception in 2006, the band has released seven studio albums and have become a popular act in both the English underground metal scene and the wider international metal arena. Winterfylleth are self-described as "English Heritage Black Metal" and is often considered to be musical 'brothers-in-arms' with fellow English black metal band Wodensthrone owing to the common lyrical and aesthetic themes they share. The band takes its name from the Old English word 'Winterfylleth', which translates into modern English as 'Winter Full Moon' and is signified by the arrival of the first full moon of winter.
The Wild Hunt is the fifth studio album by Swedish black metal band Watain. It was released through Century Media on 19 August 2013 in Europe and 20 August 2013 in USA. The cover art was painted "in oil and mixed materials" by Zbigniew M. Bielak, who was also responsible for the artwork of Lawless Darkness. The album sold around 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release, and was the best-selling album in their home country of Sweden on the week of its release, making it the band's highest sales and chart debut to date. Vargnatt is the debut demo tape by Norwegian black metal band Ulver, issued in 1993 independently. The cassette was limited to 200 hand-numbered copies. The demo was self-produced by Ulver, and recorded in the Norwegian trollforest between 15 and 17 October 1993. This is the only release to feature guitarists Reza and Grellmund, and drummer Czral, as they had left after the new year.

It was released on 17 November 2017 through frontman Justin Broadrick's own record label, Avalanche Recordings, and was the band's second album since reforming in 2010. The single "Post Self" was released for streaming on 31 October 2017, and a second track, "Be God", was released for streaming on 11 November 2017, six days in advance of the full release. Godflesh avoided interviews in the wake of Post Self, hoping to retain some of the album's purity and give listeners a chance to digest the music in a vacuum.
