The Dog and the Shadow is an 1822 genre painting by the British artist Edwin Landseer. [1] Produced near the beginning of the painter's career, it is inspired by "The Dog and Its Reflection" one of Aesop's Fables. [2] [3]

The work was displayed at the British Institution's 1826 exhibition at Pall Mall. [4] Today the painting is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, having been donated by the art collector Joseph Sheeksphanks in 1857. [5]
