The 5th Africa Movie Academy Awards ceremony was held on April 4, 2009, at the Gloryland Cultural Center in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, to honor the best African films of 2008. It was broadcast live on Nigerian national television. Africa Movie Academy Award winner Kate Henshaw-Nuttal and Nigerian stand-up comedian Julius Agwu hosted the ceremony. Numerous celebrities graced the event, including Timipre Sylva and Nollywood actresses and actors. Special guests were Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker and Hollywood actor Danny Glover.
The emerging film industry in Uganda is known as Ugawood or sometimes Kinauganda by the locals. The 2005 production Feelings Struggle directed by Ashraf Ssemwogerere is credited with being the first Ugawood film. Many have asserted that this steadily growing film industry is derived from Hollywood, in the same manner as Nollywood and Bollywood. In a story that ran in a local newspaper in Uganda about the naming of the industry, filmmakers Kuddzu Isaac, Matt Bish and Usama Mukwaya were quoted as saying that Ugawood would be the most appropriate name for the industry.
Michelle Bello is a British Nigerian film director and film producer. She is also CEO of a Nigerian-based entertainment and publishing company, Blu Star Entertainment Limited. Bello was born in London, England.
Dilman Dila is a Ugandan writer, film maker and a social activist. He is the author of two collection of short stories, A Killing in the Sun and Where Rivers Go to Die, and of two novellas, Cranes Crest at Sunset, and The Terminal Move. He was shortlisted for the 2013 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for "A Killing in the Sun", longlisted for the Short Story Day Africa prize, 2013, and nominated for the 2008 Million Writers Award for the short story "Homecoming". He was longlisted for the BBC International Radio Playwriting Competition with his first radio play, Toilets Are for Something Fishy. His film The Felistas Fable (2013) won four awards at the Uganda Film Festival 2014, for Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Feature Film, and Film of the Year. It won two nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for Best First Feature by a Director, and Best Make-up Artist. It was also nominated for the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards for Best Make-up artist, 2013. His first short film, What Happened in Room 13, is one of the most watched African films on YouTube. In 2015, he was longlisted for the Inaugural Jalada Prize for Literature for his story "Onen and his Daughter".
Battle of the Souls is a 2007 supernatural Ugandan thriller directed by Matt Bish. It featured in the 28th African Film Festival of Verona (Italy). Dubbed the 'first' Ugawood feature film, it was also Matt's maiden film after returning home to Kampala in 2005 from film school in Amsterdam. He assembled a cast that made film history. It received 10 nominations at the 5th Africa Movie Academy Awards and eventually scooped the awards for Best Visual Effect and Best Supporting Actor.
A Good Catholic Girl is a 2010 Ugandan short film about a Muslim girl's attraction to someone from a different religious affiliation. It was written, produced and directed by Matt Bish. Matthew Nabwiso won the Best Supporting actor award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for playing "Ahmed" in the film.
Beneath The Lies is a Ugandan television drama-mystery series created by Nana Kagga Macpherson and starring Flavia Tumusiime, Natasha Sinayobye, Gaetano Kagwa, Hellen Lukoma, Rabadaba, Deedan Muyira, Cedric Babu Ndilima, Patrick Salvado Idringi and Susan Naava as regular cast members. The series was directed by Joseph Kitsha Kyasi and Tosh Gitonga. It was originally produced by Savannah MOON Productions, and Kinetic Media Group before all production was taken over by 40Plus Productions, a production house co-owned by Nana Kagga and Cedric Babu Ndilima. It airs on Sundays at 9:30 p.m. EAT, on New Vision Group's Urban TV Uganda.
The Route is a Ugandan film directed by Jayant Maru, based on a screenplay he wrote. It is about human trafficking in Uganda.
A Dog Story is a Ugandan short film about Atim, a young woman who tries to escape from her abductor Bongwat and comes face to face with the reality of what it means to be an abductee, and the consequences of requiting his love. It was produced by actress and dental assistant Doreen Mirembe as her debut production.
Flora Suya is a Malawian actress. She was nominated as best actress at the 6th and 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards ceremonies.
Vinaya Sungkur is a Mauritian actress, who was nominated for Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as "Savita" in Les enfants de Troumaron in 2014.
Rehema Nanfuka is a Ugandan film, theatre and television actress, director, and filmmaker known for her roles in Imani, Veronica's Wish, Imbabazi, The Girl in the Yellow Jumper, Queen of Katwe, and Imperial Blue, among other films.
The Mercy of the Jungle is a 2018 internationally co-produced film from Rwandan director Joël Karekezi. It tells the story of two Rwandan soldiers separated from their military unit at the beginning of the Second Congo War and their struggle to survive in a hostile jungle environment amidst intense armed conflict.
Veronica’s Wish is a Ugandan English-language drama film starring Nisha Kalema (Veronica), Housen Mushema (Michael), Malaika Nyanzi (Bankia) and Symon Base Kalema (Frank). It premiered in Uganda on 17 November 2018.
Bed of Thorns (#Tosirika) is a Ugandan, all-female crew produced drama film directed and produced by Eleanor Nabwiso under the Nabwiso Films banner. The film addresses the issue of gender-based and domestic violence. It stars media personality Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi, Diana Kahunde, youtuber and social media comedian Martha Kay, Agnes Kebirungi, Michael Wawuyo Jr., Housen Mushema, Sara Kisawuzi and Patrick Salvador Idringi. The film premiered on 30 March 2019 at a red carpet event at Century Cinema Kamwokya, Kampala.
Imbabazi: The Pardon is a 2013 Rwandan film, written and directed by Joël Karekezi in his feature film debut.
Michael Wawuyo Sr is a Ugandan actor and special effects artist. He is notable for his big screen roles on Last King of Scotland, Kony: Order from Above, The Only Son, Sometimes in April, The Mercy of the Jungle and small screen roles on NTV's Yat Madit and Power of Legacy.
Eleanor Vaal Nansibo Nabwiso is a Ugandan actress, producer, director and television personality. She is known for her work on The Hostel, Rain, Beneath the Lies - The Series and Bed of Thorns as the director. She also owns a production company called Nabwiso Films which she set up together with her husband Matthew Nabwiso.
The Uganda Film Festival Award for Best Actor is an award presented annually by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) at the Uganda Film Festival. It is given in honor of a male actor who has exhibited outstanding acting while working in the film industry in Uganda. The award was introduced in 2014 with Isaac Kuddu as the first winner for his acting work on Felista's Fable.
Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi professionally known by her mononym as Malaika is a Ugandan actress, media personality, model and fashionista. She is mostly known for her radio work on the D’Mighty Breakfast show on KFM and Malaika and Oulanya on Capital Fm as well as her acting work on Veronica's Wish, Bed of Thorns, The Honourables and Mela.
