The Gargoyle is the student newspaper of University College at the Canadian University of Toronto. It was named after the gargoyle statue in the college building, which was originally created by Frederick Cumberland in emulation of tenth century medieval architecture. [1]
The Gargoyle was established in 1954 [2] as the first regularly appearing student newspaper at University College. Except for a hiatus between 1973 and 1977, when the University College Literary and Athletic Society lost its entire budget to an impersonator of its treasurer and the paper was forced to collapse, [2] it has published continuously since 1954.
The Gargoyle is staffed by an editorial masthead of undergraduate students, as well as a group of staff and regular contributors.
The Gargoyle has taken many formats over the years. Formerly self-described as a "knee-jerk, left-wing, reactionary rag," [3] it currently calls itself "University of Toronto's greasiest publication" and publishes opinions; arts and culture articles; science articles; poetry and prose; and comics, in addition to photography and visual art. [4] The Gargoyle accepts contributions from all University of Toronto students, although the majority of contributors are from University College.
The Gargoyle was notable for its somewhat archaic production style. As opposed to most contemporary publications, The Gargoyle was, until 2008, laid out completely by hand, forsaking desktop publishing applications for scissors and glue. Issues were assembled on cardboard "flats", which were then physically transported to the printer. [5] The Gargoyle has since shifted to a hybrid production style, in which most pages are still laid out by hand on paper but are then scanned and digitally modified. This shift of process has allowed for the possibility of online publication and resulted in the creation of the Gargoyle website in 2010. [6]

The Michigan Daily is the weekly student newspaper of the University of Michigan. Its first edition was published on September 29, 1890. The newspaper is financially and editorially independent of the university's administration and other student groups, but shares a university building with other student publications on 420 Maynard Street, north of the Michigan Union and Huetwell Student Activities Center. In 2007, renovations to the historic building at 420 Maynard were completed, funded entirely by private donations from alumni. To dedicate the renovated building, a reunion of the staffs of The Michigan Daily, the Michiganensian yearbook, and the GargoyleHumor Magazine was held on October 26–28, 2007.

The Silhouette is a student newspaper at McMaster University, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The masthead staff consists of the Editor-in-Chief, a recently graduated student from McMaster, and approximately 15 paid full-time students. The newspaper is published every Thursday during the academic year, and once during each summer month. The circulation is 3,000 copies per week. The paper contains six major sections; news, opinions, sports, features, arts and culture, and Humans of McMaster.
The Tribune, formerly known as The McGill Tribune is an independent campus newspaper published by the Tribune Publication Society in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Tribune has been entirely student-run since its foundation in 1981, and has a good reputation for unbiased and trustworthy reporting. The Tribune covers a variety of different subjects, including but not limited to news, opinion, student life & features, arts & entertainment, science & technology, and sports. It has a print circulation of 2,000 between McGill's downtown and Macdonald campuses. It publishes once a week on Tuesdays in print, with additional daily content online.

Descant was a quarterly literary magazine that published new and established contemporary writers and visual artists from Canada and around the world, reflecting "a cosmopolitan awareness." It was established in 1970 as a mimeograph. Based in Toronto, in its later years Descant published two themed issues per year, and a winter and summer miscellany issue. From 2007 to 2014, Descant sponsored the Winston Collins/Descant Prize for Best Canadian Poem.
Michael Power / St. Joseph High School is a Catholic secondary school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The school is an amalgamation of two independent schools in the neighbourhood, Michael Power High School and St. Joseph Islington High School with the two schools amalgamated in 1982 officially. The school joined the Metropolitan Separate School Board in 1987.
