Overview

The Great Arab Minds Initiative is an annual award launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates to honor Arab scholars. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Contents

The Great Arab Minds award is given in six categories: Natural Sciences, Medicine, Literature & Arts, Economics, Engineering and Technology, and Architecture and Design. [7]

History

In June 2014 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum published an article titled 'Reverse Brain Drain', highlighting the loss faced by the Arab nations due to the emigration of scholars. [8] Eight years later, in January 2022, he inaugurated the award in the hopes of reducing brain drain in the Arab world. [9] [10]

One million Dirhams is awarded for each winner in each category to support research and projects. [12] [13] [14]

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations

Nominations for the award are open throughout the year on the official website of the Great Arab Minds. [15]

Assessment Method and Evaluation Criteria

All nominations are reviewed and evaluated annually by specialized committees. Afterwards, all the information and documents mentioned for the nomination are verified. Then, a group of candidates is selected for each category based on specific criteria and standards. From among these groups, one winner is chosen for each category.

The Great Arab Minds Award Ceremony [22]

An award ceremony for the winners takes place at the Museum of the Future in Dubai, attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, along with several officials, Arab scientists, experts, and distinguished guests.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, presents the trophy of The Great Arab Minds Award to six winners in recognition of their achievements.

The Great Arab Minds Trophy [23]

The trophy, designed by Yasmin Al Mulla, reflects the essence and resilience of the Arab individual, symbolizing their contributions to human civilization despite challenges. The base of the award is made of metal and features engravings of characters from the Ugaritic alphabet, one of the earliest known alphabets.

The award displays the logo of The Great Arab Minds, an illustration of a magnetic field that represents the convergence of minds, highlighting the role of role models, researchers, and scientists in advancing scientific progress in the Arab world and signifies the release and drive of energies toward achieving scientific advancement.

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was an Emirati royal, politician and a founder of the United Arab Emirates. He was the vice president from the founding of the UAE until his death. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is an Emirati royal and politician who serves as minister of finance of the United Arab Emirates, deputy ruler of Dubai and chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated. He was named as deputy ruler in February 2008 when his elder brother Hamdan was made crown prince. Saeed Al Nazari is a United Arab Emirates (UAE) government official. He is the Secretary General of Great Arab Minds, and served as the director general of the Federal Youth Authority, executive director of the youth at the UAE Prime Minister's Office, and chief strategy officer of the Arab Youth Center.
