The Hated was an Annapolis, Marylandemo band from 1984 to 1989. The original members were Mike Bonner, Erik Fisher, Daniel Littleton, and Colin Meeder. The Hated are known as one of the earliest emo bands.
After an early start as a parody of some of the DC hardcore scene's more rockist tendencies, the band's music quickly became more serious, more musically complicated than that of many of their contemporaries and followers, including melodic basslines, vocal harmonies and guitar playing (and tunings) borrowed from folk music, and drumming often more reminiscent of Keith Moon of the Who than most punk and post-punk drumming. The lyrics were complicated as well, occasionally containing biblical allusions or phrases in French and German.
The original line-up recorded lasted until the fall of 1985, when Bonner was replaced by Kenny Hill of the Spastic Rats and Meeder was replaced by John Irvine. This version of the group recorded two of the Hated's best known works, the "Like the Days" EP and the sessions that were later released as the "What Was Behind" LP (this LP release has since been disowned by the band, as it was mastered at the wrong speed). Irvine left the band around the beginning of 1987; he was replaced first by Erik Fisher's brother Jason and then by Colin Meeder, who re-joined in early 1988.
After the dissolution of the Hated, Littleton and Meeder went on to form Three Shades of Dirty and were members of the band Slack with Jenny Toomey. Littleton was later a member of Liquorice with Toomey and appeared on Lisa Loeb'sTails. Littleton is currently a member of Ida.
The Hated's works are currently all out-of-print. A comprehensive compilation is said to be forthcoming from Troubleman Unlimited; this has, however, been delayed for several years.

Emo is a rock music genre characterized by an emphasis on emotional expression, sometimes through confessional lyrics. It emerged as a style of post-hardcore from the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement in Washington, D.C., where it was known as emotional hardcore or emocore and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. In the early–mid 1990s, emo was adopted and reinvented by alternative rock, indie rock and pop punk bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Weezer and Jimmy Eat World, with Weezer breaking into the mainstream during this time. By the mid-1990s, bands such as Braid, the Promise Ring and the Get Up Kids emerged from the burgeoning Midwest emo scene, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the genre. Meanwhile, screamo, a more aggressive style of emo using screamed vocals, also emerged, pioneered by the San Diego bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow. Screamo achieved mainstream success in the 2000s with bands like Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Story of the Year, Thursday, The Used, and Underoath.

Rites of Spring was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., in the mid-1980s, known for their energetic live performances. Along with Embrace, and Beefeater, they were one of the mainstay acts of the 1985 Revolution Summer movement which took place within the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene. Musically, Rites of Spring increased the frenetic violence and visceral passion of hardcore while simultaneously experimenting with its compositional rules. Lyrically, they also shifted hardcore into intensely personal realms and, in doing so, are often considered the first emo band but Rites of Spring itself rejected any association between themselves and emo genres.
Moss Icon is an American post-hardcore band formed in late 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Its original members are singer Jonathan Vance, guitarist Tonie Joy, bassist Monica DiGialleonardo, and drummer Mark Laurence. Alex Badertscher joined as second guitarist in 1990. Moss Icon is known as an early influence on the hardcore punk splinter genre known as post-hardcore, as well as on the eventual development of emo, although the band members themselves have denied knowingly contributing to the latter genre in any way.
Dag Nasty is an American punk rock band from Washington D.C., formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat, drummer Colin Sears and bassist Roger Marbury, both of Bloody Mannequin Orchestra, and vocalist Shawn Brown. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to post-hardcore; their sound was partly influenced by The Faith and their 1983 EP Subject to Change. Brian Baker said in “Filmage”, the documentary about Descendents, that he started Dag Nasty as a direct inspiration from them.
Agnostic Front is an American hardcore punk band from New York City. Founded in 1980, the band is considered an important influence to the New York hardcore scene, as well as for pioneering the crossover thrash genre.

The Casualties are an American street punk band from New York City founded by vocalist Jorge Herrera, Hank (guitar), Colin Wolf (vocals), Mark Yoshitomi (bass) and Yureesh Hooker (drums) in 1990. On July 11, 2017 it was announced on the band's Facebook page that original frontman Jorge Herrera had officially retired from touring. As of July 2017, the band consists of members Jake Kolatis (Guitarist), Marc Meggers (Drums), Rick Lopez (Bass), and David Rodriguez (Vocals).

Three Shades of Dirty was an emo band from Annapolis, Maryland, active in early 1990s. The original members were Daniel Littleton, Sandy Whitesel and Colin Meeder. Littleton and Meeder had previously played in The Hated. The band released a demo in 1990 on independent label Vermin Scum titled Paper Roses and was later featured on label Troubleman Unlimited's first compilation release Superpowers released in 1992.
