The Allmusic review by Rick Anderson awarded the album 4 stars out of 5, stating "Melodically, Cline is clearly influenced by Derek Bailey, but his tone and execution are all his, and his compositions reward the effort it sometimes takes to follow them. Recommended". [2] Writing for All About Jazz, Michael Parker stated "this is unique music that might very well slip through the cracks of the improv, jazz, and rock worlds, but such an oversight would be unfair indeed". [4] JazzTimes' Bill Milkowski noted "Nels Cline is normally known for his distortion-laced banshee wail on electric guitar, but his Inkling quartet affords him the opportunity to communicate on a softer dynamic with Mark Dresser's contrabass, Billy Mintz's drumset and Zeena Parkins' harp. The result is at times gentler, though no less creative, than his more electrified endeavors". [5]

Zeena Parkins is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist active in experimental, free improvised, contemporary classical, and avant-jazz music; she is known for having "reinvented the harp". Parkins performs on standard harps, several custom electric harps, piano, and accordion. She is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow and professor in the Music Department at Mills College.
Draw Breath is the third album released by The Nels Cline Singers in 2007. It featured both abrasive musical textures and gentler compositions such as "Caved-In Heart Blues" and "The Angel of Angels," the latter of which The New York Times called one of the prettiest works of Nels Cline's career.
