The Lawsuits is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [1] led by songwriter Brian Dale Allen Strouse and vocalist Vanessa Winters [2]

History

The band was started by Brian Dale Allen Strouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania with Vanessa Winters and Brendan Cunningham, and later added Josh Friedman. [3] The band started recording home demos and performing live in 2010 at small clubs in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia.

In August 2012, the band performed at the 22nd Annual Concerts in the Park series presented by Philadelphia Weekly and FUZE in Rittenhouse Square [4] with Ground Up. In September of that year, The Lawsuits performed at the 2012 WHYY Connections Festival [5] with Yo La Tengo, Frank Turner, Maps & Atlases, and Fabian Akilles.

In 2013, the band was named the Philadelphia Indie Band of the Year [6] by Tri-State Indie at the Tri-State Indie Awards. In March 2013, The Lawsuits recorded and released a Key Studio Session by WXPN. Daytrotter released a session by the band in September 2013. [7] They have performed at CMJ Music Festival (2012-2013), 2013 Philadelphia Folk Festival on the main stage, [8] and have shared the stage with Sturgill Simpson, Skylar Grey, Delta Spirit, The All-American Rejects, Lake Street Dive, The Vaccines, Frank Turner, Yo La Tengo, J Roddy Walston & the Business, Good Old War, Maps & Atlases. [9]

Over the course of 3 months (October 2012- December 2012), The Lawsuits recorded Cool Cool Cool. It was produced and mixed by Bill Moriarty at his studio in East Falls, Pennsylvania. [10] Howie Weinberg mastered the album at his studio in Los Angeles. The band released Cool Cool Cool in October 2013. [11] The band garnered some national attention with the release of Cool Cool Cool via Artist Direct and MSN Music, [12] [13] premiering songs via Rolling Stone Magazine, [14] Spin (magazine), [15] and a music video via Paste (magazine). [16] Drum tracks for Love is Weight were recorded at the Converse Rubber Tracks Studio in Brooklyn, NY. [17]

Rise Above is an album by indie rock band Dirty Projectors, released on September 11, 2007. The album was band leader David Longstreth's reinterpretation of Black Flag album Damaged from memory having not heard it in 15 years. The album features Longstreth on guitar and vocals, Amber Coffman on vocals and guitar, Brian McOmber on drums, Nat Baldwin on bass, and Susanna Waiche on vocals. Angel Deradoorian would join the band shortly before the Rise Above tour on bass and vocals. This album is the first that presents Dirty Projectors as a fully realized band rather than an individual project of Longstreth.

The Lovely Sparrows is an Austin, Texas based indie rock band currently on Abandoned Love Records and founded by Shawn Jones. Their sound is categorized as indie rock, folk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, or just rock, blending lush, complex arrangements with sing-along choruses that bring to mind folk-inflected pop and well-written novellas. Pulling Up Floors, Pouring on (New) Paint, released in 2006, captures the gorgeous melodies and warm, organic maladies of front man Shawn Jones. The September 2008 release saw the band embark on its most extensive touring to date, which included CMJ Music Marathon, Pop Montreal and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The Lovely Sparrows premiered the music video directed and animated by Eric Power of Clear Productions for "Year of the Dog" off Bury the Cynic during the 2009 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The video was honored as one of the 25 best music videos of the year 2008 by MusicForants.com. Bury the Cynics was on the best of list by Fensepost, The Bomb Shelter (#11), the Austinist (#5), Side One: Track One v1 (#7) and Side One: Track One v2 (#1).
