In 1988, George A. Romero was considered to direct the film adaptation, but it never came to fruition. [1] By 2007, Frank Darabont had secured the rights to the film adaptation of the novel. [2] He said that he would "get to it one day". He planned to make it low-budget, "weird, existential, and very self contained". [3] In April 2018, New Line Cinema would adapt a film based on the novel, with James Vanderbilt attached to write and produce the film along with Bradley Fischer and William Sherak through their Mythology Entertainment banner. [4] In May 2019, it was announced that André Øvredal would direct the adaptation. [5] However, in November 2023, Øvredal was no longer directing the adaptation and Francis Lawrence was announced to replace Øvredal as a director for the adaptation. The rights for the adaptation was moved to Lionsgate after the rights lapsed from New Line. [6] On June 10, 2024, Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson entered negotiations to star in the adaptation. [7] The next month, Hoffman and Jonsson were confirmed to join the cast, alongside Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, and Roman Griffin Davis. [8]

Filming

Principal photography began on July 24, 2024, in Winnipeg, and it is expected to wrap on September 12. [8] [9]
