The Nethersole School of Nursing, also known as CUHK Nursing, is one of the five schools under the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). It conducts nursing research and offers nursing education programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

According to the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2023 in Nursing, CUHK Nursing is ranked as the 1st institution in Hong Kong and Asia, and the 16th globally. [1]

History

The original Nethersole School of Nursing (NSN) was the 1st hospital-based training school for nurses in Hong Kong set up in 1893 under the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. [2]

CUHK Nursing was originally established as the Department of Nursing under the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK in 1991. It was the 1st academic department offering tertiary-level nursing education in Hong Kong. [3]

In 2002, the Department merged with the NSN, [4] and was formally renamed ‘The Nethersole School of Nursing’ in appreciation of the support of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation. It shared the same motto with NSN – ‘to serve the community with compassion’. [5]

Apart from the QS World University Ranking, the School was also ranked as the world’s 2nd nursing institution by the 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects published by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) (ShanghaiRanking). [6]

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care is an academic faculty within King's College London. The faculty is the world's first nursing school to be continuously connected to a fully serving hospital and medical school. Established on 9 July 1860 by Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, it was a model for many similar training schools through the UK, Commonwealth and other countries for the latter half of the 19th century. It is primarily concerned with the education of people to become nurses and midwives. It also carries out nursing research, continuing professional development and postgraduate programmes. The Faculty forms part of the Waterloo campus on the South Bank of the River Thames and is now one of the largest faculties in the university.

Modern medical education in Hong Kong started with the founding of the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese in 1887. Currently, six institutes of higher education are engaged in the training of medical practitioners in Hong Kong.

Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) (Chinese: 香港中文大學醫學院) was established in 1981 and consists of five schools which offer an array of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the field of medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health. The Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital is the faculty's teaching facility and base of research. The medium of instruction of all programs is English while Chinese is also retained for the teaching of Chinese Medicine.

The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine or LKS Faculty of Medicine (HKUMed), formerly known as the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, is a medical school which comprises several schools and departments that provide an array of tertiary programmes in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and chinese medicine. English is the medium of instruction in all of the classes while Chinese is also retained for the teaching of Chinese medicine. It is located several kilometres away from the main campus of the university and is near the Queen Mary Hospital which is its main teaching facility and research base. Founded in 1887, it is also one of the oldest western medical schools in the Far East.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ho Miu-ling</span> Hong Kong philanthropist

Ho Miu-ling (1847–1937) was a philanthropist in British Hong Kong. Her influential family included her brother, barrister Kai Ho, her husband, diplomat Wu Tingfang, and her son, diplomat Wu Chaoshu. The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital is named for her and for her sister-in-law, Alice Walkden.
