The Next Internet Millionaire is an online reality show hosted by Joel Comm and written and directed by Eric Holmlund. The world's first Internet reality show and based on the NBC show The Apprentice , [1] the program was released entirely on the Internet in 2007. There was a $25,000 prize and the opportunity to work together with Comm on a project with the goal of earning $1 million.
Joel Comm of Loveland, Colorado, and Eric Holmlund of Fort Collins, Colorado, conceived of the show in 2007. [2] After 300 potential entrants sent audition videos to producers, the first round of voting eliminated all but 50 contestants. [3] People on the Internet were allowed to help select the contestants, though the final decision was made by Comm. [2] The contestants were not allowed to include their Internet business endeavors, so that viewers could vote for them based only on their charisma. [3] On July 17, 2007, [4] six men and six women were chosen as finalists, from Canada, Costa Rica, England, and the United States. [2] The reality show producers funded all of the contestants' trips to the filming location. [5] The winner would receive a $25,000 prize and the opportunity to work together with Comm on a project with the goal of earning $1 million. [2] [6] They flew the contestants out to Loveland and began the two-week filming on July 22, 2007. [7]
The Next Internet Millionaire was viewable only on the Internet; [4] according to Canwest and the Lincoln Journal Star , it is the first Internet reality show. [1] [8] Author Michael A. Banks said it was the "first competitive Web reality show". [9] The show had 12 episodes, which were released every Wednesday on the show's website. [2] It was based on The Apprentice ; [10] the producers referred to it as the "online version" of that program [3] and as "The Apprentice Meets YouTube". [1] The contestants were expected to finish 12 assignments including making a website, copywriting, and Internet marketing. [2] They were coached by roughly a dozen "Internet marketing experts" who write books about how they make money. [3] [11]
Executive Producer Joel Comm refused to put an exact figure on the costs but indicated that the series cost more than the independent Napoleon Dynamite , which cost $400,000 to make. [2] Comm said that part of the goal of the show was to prove that it was possible to produce a real television-style show and distribute it online, bypassing the television studio system. He told the Denver Post : "Reality TV is huge, and online video is gaining momentum. My goal is to prove that Internet (video) is ready for prime time." [2]
In November 2007, the show's final pitted Jaime Luchuck, a Canadian, against American YouTube celebrity Charles Trippy. In the final contest, Luchuck wrote the book Cubicle Slave to the Next Internet Millionaire and Trippy created a video series. Luchuck won The Next Internet Millionaire through her $70,000 sales of her book, while Trippy had only $39,000 sales of his video series. As her prize, Luchuck won $25,000 placed in a briefcase and one-third of her book proceeds. She said in a November 2007 interview with Canwest that although several United States employers had asked her to join them, she intended to stay in Toronto to manage the company she owns. [1]
Wired reviewer Adario Strange praised The Next Internet Millionaire for having a professional look, comparing it to a show on terrestrial television. [12] Randi Zuckerberg criticized the show in The Daily Beast , writing that its primary failing was its host, Joel Comm, whom she called a "shameless self-promoter". [13]
Riley Duncan of TechCrunch said he was unsure about whether to praise or criticize the show. He noted that the show is "slickly produced" and that parts of the experts' suggestions are "worth watching", specifically for people who want to do online marketing. He concluded, however, that The Next Internet Millionaire is just "a front for Joel Comm Inc." so that he can gain wider publicity, allowing him to increase sales of his e-books. [14]
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is an international television game show franchise of British origin, created by David Briggs, Mike Whitehill and Steven Knight. In its format, currently owned and licensed by Sony Pictures Television, contestants tackle a series of multiple-choice questions to win large cash prizes in a format that twists on many game show genre conventions – only one contestant plays at a time, similar to radio quizzes; contestants are given the question before deciding whether to answer, and have no time limit to answer questions; and the amount offered increases as they tackle questions that become increasingly difficult. The Apprentice is an American reality television program that judged the business skills of a group of contestants. It ran in various formats across fifteen seasons on NBC from 2004 to 2017. The Apprentice was created by British television producer Mark Burnett, and co-produced with Donald Trump, who was the show's host for the first fourteen seasons. Billed as "The Ultimate Job Interview", seven of the show's seasons featured aspiring, but otherwise unknown, businesspeople who would vie for the show's prize, a one-year $250,000 starting contract to promote one of Donald Trump's properties. The show features 14 to 18 such business people who compete over the course of the season, with usually one contestant eliminated per episode. Contestants are split into two "corporations" (teams), with one member from each volunteering as a project manager on each new task. The corporations complete business-related tasks such as selling products, raising money for charity, or creating an advertising campaign, with one corporation selected as the winner based on objective measures and subjective opinions of the host and the host's advisors who monitor the teams' performance on tasks. The losing corporation attends a boardroom meeting with the show's host and their advisors to break down why they lost and determine who contributed the least to the team. Episodes ended with the host eliminating one contestant from the competition, with the words "You're fired!"

Adult contestants answer questions, as if they came from an elementary grade school quiz. The original U.S. version debuted on the Fox Broadcasting network on February 27, 2007, with host Jeff Foxworthy, airing on Fox until 2009, as a syndicated TV series, between 2009 and 2011, and then revived on Fox in 2015, and again on Nickelodeon in 2019, with new host, John Cena. The Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? format, has since been replicated in several other countries, some versions under the same title, and some under modified ones.

Ink Master is an American reality competition television series that originally aired on Paramount Network, now airing on the Paramount+ Streaming service and 24/7 on the Pluto app which has a channel dedicated entirely to the show. The first season originally premiered on January 17, 2012. The show is hosted by Dave Navarro who joins Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck to make up a panel of judges that decides which contestants get to continue in the competition and which go home, ultimately deciding the winner at the end. Peck left the series after a controversial post from years prior in which he wore blackface resurfaced. Each season features tattoo artists who compete in various challenges assessing their tattooing and related artistic skills. They are judged by renowned tattoo artists and enthusiasts, with one or more contestants eliminated each episode. The last contestant standing each season receives a $100,000 prize, the title of Ink Master, and a feature in Inked Magazine. The series is produced by Original Media, which also produced the reality show Miami Ink.
