The Outlook is a newspaper published in Gresham, Oregon, a suburb of Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was founded in 1911, [2] [3] and is owned by the Pamplin Media Group.
The newspaper was named the Gresham Outlook from 1911 to 1991 and was published by H. L. St. Clair, [4] who incorporated the business as the Outlook Publishing Company in 1917. The paper was renamed simply The Outlook in 1991. [5]
The newspaper was purchased in 1960 by Lee Irwin and Walt Taylor, [6] and Irwin was its publisher from 1960 to 1982. [7] He was followed by Robert Caldwell for a relatively short period, with Steven J. Clark being named publisher effective April 4, 1983. [8]
Irwin and Taylor sold the Gresham Outlook in 1977 to the Democrat-Herald Publishing Co., which published the Albany Democrat-Herald . [9] Capital Cities purchased the company in 1980, [10] which itself was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1995. [11] Disney sold its Oregon newspapers to Lee Enterprises in 1997, [12] and three years later Lee sold The Outlook to Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. in 2000. [13] Pamplin Media Group was sold in June 2024 to Carpenter Media Group. [14]

Eagle Newspapers was an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The company originated in 1948 when Elmo Smith purchased the Blue Mountain Eagle. He would later sell the paper but the company's name would be derived from that title. Smith served a partial term as Oregon Governor and upon his death the business was managed by his son Denny Smith, who rapidly grew it from three newspapers to nearly twenty in the span of two decades. By 1985, Eagle Newspapers publications accounted for nearly one-half of the weekly newspapers sold each week in Oregon. The company sold off its last paper in 2020.
