The Paris Derby, (French: Derby de Paris) is a French football rivalry between Paris FC and Paris Saint-Germain, [1] [2] which are the two of the largest football clubs based in Paris, in France. [3] [4]
Paris Saint-Germain was founded in 1970 and entered Ligue 2. The team was promoted to Ligue 1 in its first 1970–71 season, but was relegated back to Ligue 2 the following 1971–72 season. [5]
Paris FC, which was established in 1969, remained a local club until 1971. The team officially joined Ligue 1 in the 1972–73 season but was relegated to Ligue 2 the following 1973–74 season. During that same season, Paris Saint-Germain managed to secure promotion from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1. [6]
Paris FC competed in Ligue 2 from 1973 to 1977 and finally achieved promotion to Ligue 1 in the 1977–78 season. The first Paris Derby took place in the 1978–79 season in Ligue 1. This match was held on August 18, 1978, at Parc des Princes, hosted by Paris Saint-Germain, and ended in a 2–2 draw. [7] The return fixture that season was played on December 17, 1978, at Stade Déjerine, hosted by Paris FC, and finished 1–1. [8] [ citation needed ] By the end of that season, Paris FC was relegated back to Ligue 2.[ citation needed ]
On December 16, 2022, [9] a friendly match between Paris Saint-Germain and Paris FC was held at Camp des Loges, [10] [11] ending in a 2–1 victory for Paris Saint-Germain. [12] [13]
In the 2024–25 season of Ligue 2, Paris FC achieved promotion to Ligue 1 after 46 years, [14] [15] marking the return of the Paris Derby. [16] [17] [18]
