According to the 2011 census it has a population of 6,234 people in 1,680 households. Then name Klawer comes from the Afrikaans word for a type of wild clover which grows here after the rains.

Bitterfontein is a village in the Knersvlakte, the northernmost area of the Western Cape province of South Africa, 320 kilometres (200 mi) north of Cape Town. The Karoo Gemeenskap Party is a small South African regional political party which was formed in December 2010. In the 2011 municipal election, the KGP contested and won three out of seven seats in the council of the Prince Albert Local Municipality, while the African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA) each won two. It also held one seat on the council of the Central Karoo District Municipality, in which the ANC and the DA each held six. In both councils the KGP entered into a coalition with the ANC to control the municipality. In the 2016 municipal election, the KGP won two out of seven seats in the council of the Prince Albert Local Municipality, while the DA won three and the ANC two. It also held two seats on the council of the Central Karoo District Municipality. In both councils the KGP entered into a coalition with the DA.
The 2016 South African municipal elections were held on 3 August 2016, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It was the fifth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994; municipal elections are held every five years.
Chris Hunsinger is a South African politician, a Member of the South African Parliament since 2014, Caucus Whip and Treasurer with the Democratic Alliance. He was appointed by the then Leader of the Opposition Mmusi Maimane on 5 June 2019 and retained by the current Leader of the Opposition John Steenhuisen in October 2019and again in December 2020, as The Shadow Minister of Transport. Hunsinger was re-elected to Parliament on 6 June 2019. He speaks and writes about issues related to consumer and commodity needs in transport, including safety, planning, finance and management with South African road, rail, maritime, and aviation service providers.
