The Rum Story is a visitor attraction and museum in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England. [1] It presents the story of the rum trade and the creation of rum. It is located in an original 1785 trading shop and warehouses.

Whitehaven coastal town and port, Cumbria, England

Whitehaven is a town and port on the west coast of Cumbria, near the Lake District National Park in England. Historically in Cumberland, it lies by road 38 miles (61 km) south-west of Carlisle and 45 miles (72 km) to the north of Barrow-in-Furness. It is the administrative seat of Borough of Copeland district council, and has a town council for the parish of Whitehaven. The population of the town was 23,986 at the 2011 census.

The county and Cumbria County Council, its local government, came into existence in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. Cumbria's county town is Carlisle, in the north of the county, and the only other major urban area is Barrow-in-Furness on the southwestern tip of the county.

The Rum Story was started with United Kingdom National Lottery funding from the Millennium Commission and opened in May 2000. [2] It was voted Cumbria Tourism's Small Visitor Attraction in 2007.

Millennium Commission

The Millennium Commission, a United Kingdom public body, was set up to celebrate the turn of the millennium. It used funding raised through the UK National Lottery to assist communities in marking the close of the second millennium and celebrating the start of the third. The body was wound up in 2006.

The Jefferson family, wine merchants, imported wine and spirits for over two centuries until 1998. Their story is covered by the Rum Story. [3]

Urbis former exhibition and museum in Manchester, England

Urbis was an exhibition and museum in Manchester, England, designed by Ian Simpson. The building opened in June 2002 as part of the redevelopment of Exchange Square known as the Millennium Quarter. Urbis was commissioned as a 'Museum of the City' but visitor numbers were lower than expected and a switch was made in 2005-6 to presenting changing exhibitions on popular-culture alongside talks, gigs and special events. Urbis was closed in 2010, after the opportunity arose for Manchester to host the National Football Museum. In 2012, the building re-opened after a complete re-fit as the permanent National Football Museum.

CFM is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Cumbria and South West Scotland, with transmitters in Carlisle, Penrith and West Cumbria. Its musical output is popular hits of many genres, with the occasional selection of today's hits. The station is owned & operated by Bauer Radio and forms part of the Hits Radio network of stations.

It is operated by Northern who provide all passenger train services. It is unstaffed and passengers must buy their ticket on the train or at an automatic ticket machine outside the platform. Step-free access to the platform is available; train running information is provided by digital information screens and timetable posters.

Kells is an area of Whitehaven in Cumbria, England, elevated on a cliff to the south of the town centre, overlooking the Irish sea. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 2,437. Kells was built as a coal mining community.

Wetheriggs Pottery is a pottery on the C3047 road, east of the hamlet of Clifton Dykes, in the civil parish of Clifton, Cumbria 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Penrith. It opened in the mid 19th century providing farm and housewares for local consumption, later the business diversified into craft pottery, and, towards the end of the 20th century became focused as a visitor attraction, and in nature conservation work.

St Bees Head RSPB reserve RSPB nature reserve in the United Kingdom

St Bees Head RSPB Reserve at St Bees Head, Cumbria, England, is a coastal site which provides a home for thousands of seabirds under the care of the RSPB. The birds include kittiwakes, fulmars, guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, puffins, shags and herring gulls. It is the only breeding place in England for black guillemots. The rock pipit, which breeds on rocky coasts, is known to breed in only one other site in Cumbria.
