The Social is a Canadian daytime television talk show, which airs weekday afternoons on CTV and CTV Two. [1] Using a panel format similar to American talk shows such as The View or The Talk , [2] the show is hosted by Melissa Grelo (the show's moderator), Lainey Lui, Cynthia Loyst and Marci Ien. [1]

Daytime is a block of television programming taking place during the late-morning and afternoon on weekdays. Daytime programming is typically scheduled to air between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., following the early morning daypart typically dedicated to morning shows, and preceding the evening dayparts that eventually lead into prime time.

A talk show or chat show is a television programming or radio programming genre in which one person discusses various topics put forth by a talk show host.

The series covers news, lifestyle and entertainment topics, [2] and places a strong emphasis on direct and live interaction with viewers through social media. [2]

Social media Interaction in virtual communities and networks

Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definition; however, there are some common features:

  1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.
  2. User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of social media.
  3. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by the social media organization.
  4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

History

The show premiered in 2013, originally hosted by Grelo, Lui, Loyst and Traci Melchor.

Traci Melchor

Traci Melchor is a Canadian television personality, best known as the former cohost of CTV's The Social and as a reporter for the network's entertainment magazine series etalk.

Grelo took a maternity leave from the program in spring 2014. [3] A series of celebrity guest hosts appeared during her absence, including Jann Arden, Marilyn Denis, Wendy Crewson, Elisha Cuthbert, Arlene Dickinson, Arielle Kebbel, Emily Procter, Sarah Rafferty and Debbie Travis. [3]

Jann Arden Canadian singer-songwriter

Jann Arden, is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She is famous for her signature ballads, "Could I Be Your Girl" and "Insensitive", which is her biggest hit to date.

Marilyn Denis is a Canadian television and radio personality. Denis is the host of The Marilyn Denis Show and co-host of CHUM-FM's Roger and Marilyn.

Wendy Crewson actress

Wendy Jane Crewson is a Canadian actress and producer. She began her career appearing on Canadian television, before her breakthrough role in 1991 dramatic film The Doctor.

Melchor took a leave of absence from the show in 2016, with Ien stepping in as a substitute host following the cancellation of Canada AM . [4] Melchor later revealed that she took the leave of absence for mental health reasons, after bursting into uncontrollable tears while preparing for an interview with Lynn Keane, an author who had published a book about her son's suicide, leading Melchor to realize that she had not fully processed her grief over the 2015 death of her friend Chris Hyndman. [4]

<i>Canada AM</i> Canadian breakfast television show

Canada AM was a Canadian breakfast television news show that aired on CTV from 1972 to 2016. Its final hosts were Beverly Thomson and Marci Ien, with Jeff Hutcheson presenting the weather forecast and sports. The program aired on weekdays, and was produced from CTV's facilities at 9 Channel Nine Court in Toronto.

Suicide intentional act of causing ones own death

Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Mental disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and substance abuse—including alcoholism and the use of benzodiazepines—are risk factors. Some suicides are impulsive acts due to stress, such as from financial difficulties, troubles with relationships, or bullying. Those who have previously attempted suicide are at a higher risk for future attempts. Effective suicide prevention efforts include limiting access to methods of suicide—such as firearms, drugs, and poisons; treating mental disorders and substance misuse; proper media reporting of suicide; and improving economic conditions. Even though crisis hotlines are common, there is little evidence for their effectiveness.

Christopher Edward "Chris" Hyndman was a Canadian interior decorator and television personality, who was co-host of the afternoon talk show Steven and Chris on CBC Television until his death in August 2015.

Melchor announced in March 2017 that she would not be returning to the program full-time, instead concentrating on her duties with eTalk , although she will occasionally still appear on the show as a substitute host when one of the regulars is away. [5] Ien became a permanent cohost of the program. [5]

The Social films in front of a live audience on weekdays at Bell Media Queen Street in Toronto, Ontario. Audience members must be at least 18 years old to attend the taping.

International broadcasts

The series began airing in syndication in the United States through PPI Releasing and Sony Pictures Television via selective markets since September 2015, although a few stations had started airing the show during a test run prior to the push to expand it in more American television markets. [6] It had been targeted for a soft 2014 US launch but was held back in order to give the show enough time to find its footing. [7]
