The Strictly is a signature dance routine from the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing , which launched in the 13th series of the popular entertainment show. The dance was devised by Strictly Come Dancing's Director of Choreography, Jason Gilkison and draws inspiration from some of the show's most iconic moves, as well as celebrating some of the show's stars.

Background

A fragment of the dance first appeared in the professional's opening Strictly Express group number in the season premiere on 5 September 2015. [1] It was referred to explicitly for the first time by Tess Daly on 3 October 2015 after the judges danced on performing some of the signature moves [2] and discussed further the following week on the programme's sister show, Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two .

On 9 October 2015 a tutorial appeared on the BBC's website and iPlayer platform hosted by two of Strictly's professional dancers, Natalie Lowe and Tristan MacManus. [3]

The dance is intended to be performed to the Strictly theme tune, and is made up of eight simple moves which repeat: the Samba Point, the Charleston, the Shimmy, the Lasso, the Samba Bounce, the Russell Grant, the Anton Flirt, Judy Murray, and the finale which can be either the Claudia (an embrace and a leg kick), the Tess (an embrace and a leg lift) or the Brucie (an embrace and a lean forward). How To Do The Strictly

  1. Samba Point: Step across with your left foot and tap with your right. Stretch your left arm skyward. Repeat the step on your opposite leg.
  2. The Charleston: Swing your left leg to the right and then back again. Swing your arms in the opposite direction to your left leg.
  3. Samba Point: Step across with your left foot and tap with your right. Stretch your left arm skyward. Just think Saturday Night Fever. Repeat the step on your opposite leg.
  4. Shimmy: Shimmy your shoulders and step around in a box step.
  5. Lasso: Offer your right hand, partner to take hand before and bring them around your body in 6 steps.
  6. Samba Bounce: Bounce in to meet hands and then out again.
  7. Russell Grant: Face your lovely partner and roll those arms in front of your chest.
  8. Anton Flirt: Wiggle your hips. If you're not the wriggler, turn in a circle. Repeat steps 1 - 5.
  9. Judy Murray: Push in for two and out for two.
  10. The Claudia: Finish with an embrace and leg kick, or; The Tess: Finish with an embrace and leg lift; or, The Brucie: Finish with an embrace and forward lean.

Other instances

Various other BBC shows and stars have performed the routine. Notable examples include the cast of EastEnders , Casualty , Holby City , Teletubbies and Danger Mouse . On 19 October, British Airways published a video featuring their staff performing The Strictly at Heathrow Airport. [5] On 28 November, a celebration film was published that highlights some key performances of the dance by TV stars and fans of the show. [6]

Ola Jordan

Aleksandra "Ola" Jordan is a British-Polish professional ballroom dancer and model. She appeared as a professional on the British TV show Strictly Come Dancing from 2006 to 2015. After winning a championship event in her native Poland, Jordan moved to England and began a new partnership with James Jordan. They married on 12 October 2003 and live near Maidstone in Kent. In 2018, she became a judge on Dancing with the Stars: Taniec z gwiazdami in Poland.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its seventh series on 18 September 2009 on BBC One. Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly returned as presenters of the main show on BBC One, whilst Claudia Winkleman presented spin-off show Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood returned as judges. Series 5 winner Alesha Dixon joined the judging panel as a replacement for Arlene Phillips. Darcey Bussell was a guest judge from the quarter final onwards.

Aliona Valeriya Kavanagh, also known by her stage name Aliona Vilani, is a Russian-Kazakh TV personality and was a professional dancer in the BBC series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Natalie Lowe is an Australian ballroom dancer. She is a four-time Australian ballroom dance champion. Lowe competed on, and won, Australia's Dancing with the Stars with celebrity partner Anthony Koutoufides. She later joined the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. She competed on Strictly for seven series, leaving after the 2016 series concluded.

Strictly Come Dancing aired its first series on BBC One from 15 May 2004. The series was presented by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly. The judging panel was Craig Revel Horwood, Arlene Phillips, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its second series on 23 October 2004 on BBC One. Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly returned to present the main show on BBC One, while Claudia Winkleman presented a new spin-off show called Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Series 1 winner Natasha Kaplinsky filled in for Daly during the first five weeks due to maternity leave. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Arlene Phillips returned to the judging panel.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its eighth series on BBC One with a red carpet launch show on 11 September 2010, and the competitive live shows began on 1 October. The series concluded on 18 December when Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev won the competition. According to BARB data, this series was the consistently highest rated of the show to date, peaking at 14.28 million viewers. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Alesha Dixon returned as judges.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its ninth series on 10 September 2011 with a launch show, with the live shows starting on 30 September and 1 October 2011. The show was broadcast from Wembley Arena on 19 November with all proceeds going to the BBC charity, Children in Need. The final took place at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom and was the first episode in 3D, and was shown on BBC HD and 18 cinemas around the country. As in series 8 there are 14 couples with one new male professional, Pasha Kovalev, replacing Jared Murillo.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its tenth series and began with the launch show on 15 September 2012. The live shows commenced on 5 October. Fourteen celebrities took part – the same number as the previous year. Sir Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly returned to present the main show on BBC One and Claudia Winkleman returned to present the results show with Daly. Zoë Ball returned to present spin-off show Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two. Judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood all returned and were joined on the judging panel by series 7 guest judge Darcey Bussell, who replaced Alesha Dixon. She would be permanent judge for seven series until 2018.

Tess Daly returned to present the main show on BBC One alongside Claudia Winkleman, who was promoted to co-presenter in addition to the results show after Sir Bruce Forsyth decided to leave the show after the eleventh series; however, Forsyth continued to host the Christmas and Children in Need specials. Zoe Ball returned as presenter of spin-off show Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Darcey Bussell also returned.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its thirteenth series on BBC One with a launch show on 5 September 2015, with the live shows starting on 25 September 2015. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returned to present the launch show and the live shows while Zoe Ball returned to present Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood returned as judges for their thirteenth series, along with Darcey Bussell who returned for her fourth series as a judge.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its fourteenth series with a launch show on 3 September on BBC One, with the live shows starting on 23 September 2016. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returned as hosts, while Zoe Ball returned to host Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Darcey Bussell returned as judges. This was Goodman's final series as head judge.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its fifteenth series with a launch show on 9 September on BBC One, with the live shows starting on 23 September 2017. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returned as hosts, while Zoe Ball returned to host Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two on BBC Two. Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood, and Darcey Bussell returned as judges. On 9 May 2017, it was announced that Len Goodman, who had retired from the show, would be replaced by Shirley Ballas.

Strictly Come Dancing Live! is a nationwide arena tour in the United Kingdom which was first staged in 2008 and has continued every year since. It is directed and co-choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood.

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its seventeenth series with a launch show on 7 September 2019 on BBC One, with the live shows starting on 21 September. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returned as hosts, while Zoe Ball returned to host Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two alongside new addition Rylan Clark-Neal.
