Thekar is a Karbi daily newspaper published from Diphu, Assam. It is the highest circulated Karbi daily in North East India.[ citation needed ] As of 2008, it was one of the only two Karbi-language dailies in Karbi Anglong district, [1] The Thekar has wide reach among the people in terms of circulation figures as well as the reliability of the news matter.[ citation needed ]

History

The newspaper was founded with the name Angtong in the year 2004, as a weekly newspaper, but due to the opposition of the title by activist group Karbi Youth Organisation (KYO), the name was changed to Thekar.[ citation needed ] It started as a weekly, then biweekly and later into triweekly. It became a daily newspaper on 21 September 2005. The publication later expanded with an English daily "The Hills Review" and a cable TV "KAT Channel".[ citation needed ]

Contribution to Karbi Language

Before the advent of Karbi dailies in the early 2000s, there were little research on Karbi language. Karbi dailies contributed immensely to the research and development of the same. The media group (newspaper) has become the platform for improving written Karbi language, as the language has no written form. Many young writers are involved in improving the language by setting rules and coining new words through research, open discussion, etc.[ citation needed ]

Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front was a militant group operating in Karbi Anglong district and Dima Hasao district of Assam, India. Thong Teron was the general secretary of KLNLF. Karbi Anglong NC Hills People's Resistance was the armed wing of the organization. KLNLF emerged from the United People's Democratic Solidarity, being against the peace talks between the UDPS and the government. After the split, there has been turf wars between the two groups.

The Hills Times is an English-language daily newspaper published in Diphu, Assam, India. It was founded in the year 2000. It is the first English newspaper published in then undemarcated Karbi Anglong district. This made the newspaper popular among different communities and ages. The newspaper is published in Diphu and printed from Diphu and Guwahati simultaneously. The present editor is Rameswar Chauhan.

Dhaneswar Engti is a poet-author from the Indian State of Assam promoting the use of the endangered Karbi language spoken by the Karbi people of Northeastern India. Engti has authored 19 books and written around 100 songs in the Karbi language. He has also served as the Joint Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. In the year 2022, Govt. of India conferred on him the Padma Shri award for his work towards the preservation and advancement of indigenous languages.
