Thomas Reuter (born 20 January 1952) is a German composer, choral conductor, and a pianist focused on free improvisation.

Life

Reuter was born in Eisenach in 1952, the son of the conductor Rolf Reuter and the singer Anemone Rau. In his childhood he received piano and violin lessons. After the Abitur at the St. Thomas School, Leipzig he studied music at the Musikhochschule Leipzig from 1970 to 1976. [1] His teachers included Fritz Geißler [1] and Siegfried Thiele in composition, Hans Volger in piano and Rolf Reuter in conducting. [2] He received further inspiration from the composer and priest Lothar Reubke and took private singing lessons in Dresden.

He then worked as a lecturer for choir, music theory, composition and improvisation at the Spezialschule für Musik  [ de ] in Halle/Saale. [1] He composed works for the Staatskapelle Dresden [3] and the Dresden Philharmonic, [4] and chamber music. His pieces were performed in the GDR and in the so-called Eastern Bloc. In 1989, his father conducted the orchestra of the Komische Oper in the premiere of the Cello Concerto, with soloist Jan Vogler, as part of the Berliner Festtage festival. [5] [6] He was awarded music prizes in the GDR. [7]

In 1977, Reuter co-founded the Gruppe Freie Musik Dresden. He was active as an improvisor in many ways. From 1998 to 2011 he formed IndiviDuo with the violinist Rike Kohlhepp. In 2003 both formed the nu ART trio (a wordplay of "new art") with saxophonist Andreas Krennerich. In 2008 he formed PLASMA 8 with Krennerich. In 2012, he formed the Selbander duo with the singer Angelica Remlinger. In 2013 he formed the trio jo.Feuerbach with Remlinger and Krennerich. Reuter is also conductor of the women's chamber choir vocaLumen in Hannover creating settings of several poems by Paul Celan for them. He is also active in The Christian Community.

Günter Kochan German composer

Günter Kochan was a German composer. He studied with Boris Blacher and was a master student for composition with Hanns Eisler. From 1967 until his retirement in 1991, he worked as professor for musical composition at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". He taught master classes in composition at the Academy of Music and the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He was also secretary of the Music Section of the Academy of Arts from 1972 to 1974 and vice-president of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR from 1977 to 1982. Otto Reinhold was a German composer and music educator

Fritz Reuter was a German musicologist, music educator, composer and Kapellmeister. Reuter was one of the most important German music educators of the 20th century. After studying music and musicology in Dresden and Leipzig, with Teichmüller, Riemann, Schering and Abert, he received his doctorate in 1922. In 1945, he was appointed Kapellmeister at the Volksoper in Dresden. In 1949, he was appointed as the first professor of music education at a German university. He was also director of institutes at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Humboldt University Berlin. In 1955, he was one of the initiators of the first Hallische Musiktage.

Richard Schmidt was a German cantor and organist.

Horst Förster was a German conductor, choirmaster, violinist and university teacher. In 1952, he was appointed the youngest General Music Director of the GDR in the Landestheater Eisenach. Afterwards, he was chief conductor of the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Halle and the Singakademie Halle (1956–1964) as well as the Dresden Philharmonic (1964–1966).

Volker Rohde was a German conductor and academic teacher. After being principal conductor of the Orchester des Opernhauses Halle from 1976 to 1979, he subsequently served as deputy principal conductor at the Semper Oper Dresden and as musical director at the Oper Leipzig.

Hans Stieber Prize German music prize

The Hans Stieber Prize is a promotional prize for composers of serious and light music, which is awarded by the fiduciary trust Hans Stieber Foundation of the Landesverband Sachsen-Anhalt Deutscher Komponistenverband based in Halle (Saale). The name giver and dedicatee is Hans Stieber (1886–1969), composer and founding director of the Staatliche Hochschule für Theater und Musik Halle.
