Thongam Thoithoi, popularly known as Mombi, is an Indian actress from Manipur [1] [2] . She is widely recognized for her comic roles in Manipuri digital films. [3] Her performance as Mombi in the film Phairenthagi Angaoba Leichil became so popular that many fans know her by the character's name rather than her real name. [4] Some of her popular films include Mathang Mapokta, Teina Onnaba, Mou Fighting, Keishamthong Thoibi , Thabaton 2 and Sanagi Tangbal . [5] [6] [7]
Thongam Thoithoi was born on February 1, 1963, in Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Imphal, Manipur. She is the eldest daughter of Thongam Thambou and Kombi Devi. In 1982, she began schooling at Shine Centre, Soibam Leikai, and later attended Wangkhei Girls' High School, Ananda Academy, and Bengali High School, from where she passed Class X. She completed her graduation at M.B. College. In 1985, she joined the Revenue Department of the Government of Manipur as a clerk on a contract basis and became a regular employee in 1995. [8]
Thoithoi is married to Thokchom Shamungou from Changangei Uchekon. The couple has two daughters, named Korin and Sugani. [8]
Thoithoi developed an early passion for the arts. At the age of 11, she began training in dance, music, and drama under Guru Shrimati Hanjabam Aruna Devi at Raga Taranga Mandal, Imphal. Her first drama where she acted was Taragi Cheikhei, scripted by Khundongbam Brojendro. Before entering films, she performed in proscenium theatre, radio dramas, and traditional plays, which laid the foundation for her acting career. [8]
Thoithoi was associated with many prominent drama groups in Manipur, including Maharaja Garibaniwaj Memorial Club, COSMO Wangkhei, North Eastern Dramatic Union (Moirangkampu), People's Dramatic Union, Meitei Artiste Union, Leimayon Art Centre, Rupmahal Theatre and Changangei Youth Dramatic Union. She acted in classic plays like Macbeth, Merchant of Venice, Bir Tikendrajit, Punshi Haibadu Ashira, and Nupi Lal. [4]
Thoithoi made her film debut in the 1990s with the feature Chekla Paikhrabada. She has acted in more than 100 Manipuri films, both in celluloid and digital formats. Her acting style, particularly in comedy roles, has made her a beloved figure in Manipuri cinema. Her role Mombi in Phairenthagi Angaoba Leichil gained widespread popularity. She also acted in several radio dramas for All India Radio (AIR), becoming an AIR-approved drama artiste in 1983. One of her popular radio plays is Nongallabasu ThabalLei Leinam, written by Moirangthem Inao. [8]
