Timothy R. Ashe (born December 10,1976) is an American politician who ran for a wide range of political offices in Vermont and served as a Democrat/Progressive in the Vermont State Senate from Chittenden County from 2009 to 2021 and as President pro tempore of the Vermont Senate from 2017 until 2021.
Ashe graduated from the University of Vermont in 1999 when he began working in then-Congressman Bernie Sanders’Burlington office where he worked for two and a half years. [1] In late 2001 Ashe took a position with United Academics,the faculty union at the University of Vermont.
From 2002 to 2004 Ashe attended Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. [1] While there he concentrated his studies on domestic social policy. He also served as a teaching assistant to Ed Miliband,now a British MP and formerly the leader of the Labour Party,in a course comparing US and northern European social policy. Upon graduating Ashe returned to Vermont.
Ashe served on the board of Spectrum Youth and Family Services,a community organization serving at-risk youth,and Housing Foundation,Inc.,a non-profit affordable housing organization. He volunteered as a baseball coach in the Old North End's Center City Little League for two years.
He lives in Burlington with his partner,Paula Routly, [2] owner and publisher of Seven Days, [3] Vermont's largest circulation left-leaning alternative political newspaper.
In July 2004,Ashe successfully sought a seat on the Burlington City Council in a special election to replace Carina Driscoll. He won re-election in 2005 and 2007. Ashe became the youngest member of the Council when elected.
Ashe worked at the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity from 2005 to 2006. In the Fall of 2006,Ashe became a Project Manager at Cathedral Square,a non-profit developer of affordable housing for seniors and people with disabilities.
In November 2008 Ashe was elected to the Vermont Senate. He won on a Democratic/Progressive fusion ticket and was endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders. [4] [2] He has won re-election every two years since.
In October 2011 Ashe declared himself a candidate for Mayor of Burlington running again on a Democratic/Progressive fusion ticket. [5] While seeking the Democratic nomination for Mayor on November 13,2011,Ashe tied Miro Weinberger in the party caucus,with each receiving 540 votes after three rounds. [6] This resulted in a second caucus,which took place on December 11,2011. [6] Weinberger won,655 votes to 533,and went on to win the general election. [6] [7]
In January 2017,Ashe was elected President Pro Tempore of the Vermont Senate by his fellow senators. While in office he served on the Senate Appropriations and Judiciary Committees. On July 23,2019,Ashe endorsed Bernie Sanders for president,but Sanders lost the nomination to Joe Biden,who won the November 2020 general election. [8]
On January 14,2020,he announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. [9] He went on to lose the Democratic primary to Molly Gray,a political newcomer running for office for the first time. Gray received 46% of the vote,and Ashe received 35%. [10] [11]
In April 2021,Doug Hoffer,the Vermont State Auditor,announced that he had hired Ashe as his deputy. [12] Ashe succeeded Andrew Stein,who left the deputy auditor's post for a position with the Vermont Department of Taxes. [12]
The Vermont Progressive Party,formerly the Progressive Coalition,is a progressive political party in the United States founded in 1999 and active only in the state of Vermont. As of 2023,the party has one member in the Vermont Senate and five members in the Vermont House of Representatives,as well as several more affiliated legislators who caucus with the Democratic Party. After the Democratic and Republican parties,the Progressive Party has the highest number of seats in state and national offices for any organized political party in the country.
The 2006 United States Senate election in Vermont was held November 7,2006. Incumbent independent Senator Jim Jeffords decided to retire rather than seek reelection to a fourth term,and Bernie Sanders was elected to succeed him.
David E. Zuckerman is an American politician who is currently serving as the 84th lieutenant governor of Vermont since 2023. He previously served two terms as the 82nd lieutenant governor of Vermont,from 2017 to 2021. A member of the Vermont Progressive Party,he previously served in the Vermont House of Representatives for seven terms (1997–2011),and the Vermont Senate for two (2013–2017). In 2020,Zuckerman was a candidate for governor of Vermont. He ran with the support of both the Progressive Party and the Democratic Party,but lost to incumbent governor Phil Scott in the general election.
Peter Francis Welch is an American lawyer and politician serving since 2023 as the junior United States senator from Vermont. A member of the Democratic Party,he was U.S. representative for Vermont's at-large congressional district from 2007 to 2023. He has been a major figure in Vermont politics for over four decades,and is only the second Democrat to be elected a senator from the state.
The 2000 United States Senate election in Vermont took place on November 7,2000. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Jim Jeffords won re-election to a third term in office. In May 2001,Jeffords left the Republican Party and announced that he would become an independent who would caucus with the Democratic Party. His party exit broke the 50–50 lock in the Senate and effectively gave the Democrats the majority. Thus,that switch marked the first time since 1855 that Vermont had no Republicans in its entire congressional delegation.

Incumbent independent Senator Bernie Sanders won reelection to a second term in a landslide,defeating Republican nominee John MacGovern with 71% of the vote. Sanders,a self-described democratic socialist,was first elected with 65% of the vote in 2006,and was the first non-Republican to win this seat since 1850.

Carina Nicole Driscoll is an American politician who served in the Vermont House of Representatives from Chittenden County from 2001 to 2003,as a member of the Vermont Progressive Party. She also served on the city council in Burlington,Vermont,and unsuccessfully sought the city's mayoralty in the 2018 election.
The 2020 Vermont gubernatorial election was held on November 3,2020,to elect the Governor of Vermont. As Vermont does not impose term limits upon its governors,incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott was eligible to run for reelection to a third two-year term in office. On November 18,2019,he confirmed that he was running for reelection,but did not yet publicly announce his campaign. On May 28,2020,he officially announced his candidacy but stated that he would not campaign,maintain a campaign staff,or fundraise because of the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Vermont. The primary was held on August 11. Scott won re-election to a third term in a landslide,defeating Progressive and Democratic nominee,Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman.
The 2018 Burlington mayoral election was held on March 6,2018. Incumbent Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger defeated independent candidates Carina Driscoll,who had the support of the Vermont Progressive Party,and Infinite Culcleasure.
