Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry was a family-run traditional bakery selling various types of kueh in Tiong Bahru, Singapore.
In 1983, Tan Yong Siang, his wife Jenny Soh and several business partners setup the bakery, Galicier, in Serangoon. [1] In 2000, after several business disagreements with the business partners, Tan and Soh set up a new bakery, Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, in Tiong Bahru around 2002. [2] [3] [4] Nine people ran the store, four of whom are family members, including Tan, Soh and their son. [5]
Tan announced on 11 April 2022 that the bakery would be closed sometime in June or July, stating that due to their old age and rising utility costs, they wanted to close the store and retire. [6] [7] Following the announcement, queues at the bakery heavily increased, and due to the fact that only a limited quantity could be produced daily, customers could only purchase a maximum of two boxes of Kueh Dadar, Putu Ayu and Ondeh Ondeh. The bakery was closed on 30 June 2022. [9]
Jasmine Tay of Lifestyle Asia included the bakery in her list of the 9 best places to get the best traditional kueh in Singapore in 2021. [10] Fabian Loo of Tatler Asia included the bakery in his list of the 6 best traditional confectionaries and bakeries in Singapore in April 2022. [11] In 2016, the bakery was awarded the Heritage Heroes Award for preserving local culinary traditions. [12]
Outram Park MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station in Singapore. The station is on the East–West, North East and Thomson–East Coast lines, and is located near the junction of Outram Road, Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road on the boundary of Bukit Merah and Outram planning areas. It is the closest MRT station to Singapore General Hospital, the Police Cantonment Complex, Outram Community Hospital and the Health Promotion Board. The station was included in the early plans of the MRT network in 1982; it was constructed a part of the Phase I MRT segment from Novena, and was due to be completed by December 1987.
Tiong Bahru is a housing estate located within the Bukit Merah Planning Area, in the Central Region of Singapore. Tiong Bahru was constructed in the 1920s by the Singapore Improvement Trust, the predecessor to the Housing Development Board (HDB) and an entity of the British colonial authority providing mass public housing in Singapore and is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. The main estate consists of 30 apartment blocks with over 900 units of two to five rooms that are also commonly referred to as "walk-ups". There are also high-rise HDB flats and condominiums along Boon Tiong Road, Jalan Membina and Kim Tian Road which surround the main estate.
Kuih are bite-sized snack or dessert foods commonly found in Southeast Asia and China. Kueh Pie Tee is a thin and crispy pastry tart shell kuih often filled with a spicy, shredded Chinese turnips, sweet mixture of thinly sliced vegetables and prawns.
