Tokini Peterside-Schwebig is a Nigerian entrepreneur, business woman and art collector. She is the founder of ART X Collective, a cultural management company in Lagos, Nigeria. The company's flagship fair, ART X Lagos, is the leading international art fair in West Africa. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Early life and education

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Peterside grew up between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, where she studied at Cheltenham Ladies’ College and Westminster School. She graduated with a First Class honours degree in law from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2015, she attended the business school, INSEAD, where she obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and lived between France and Singapore. [5] [6]

Career

After graduation from university, Peterside embarked on a career in marketing, and subsequently became Head of Marketing at Moët Hennessy, part of the LVMH group, in Nigeria.

She founded her company in 2012, and provided strategy, business planning and marketing consulting to luxury and culture businesses in Nigeria, such as ALARA, the David Adjaye-designed luxury concept store; Maki Oh, a luxury fashion designer; and the Executive Producers of Half of a Yellow Sun , the film based on Chimamanda Adichie’s novel, which starred Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and John Boyega. Art X Lagos

In 2016, Peterside launched ART X Lagos, the leading international art fair in West Africa. [5] [8] [9] Since its debut, ART X Lagos has attracted thousands of local and international visitors to experience the works of the most promising artists from across Africa and its Diaspora. The fair has been described as "West Africa's calling card for contemporary African art fairs" [10] and has featured exhibiting artists and speakers such as El Anatsui, Yinka Shonibare, Njideka Akunyili-Crosby, Wangechi Mutu, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Barthelemy Togou, Nastio Mosquito, Godfried Donkor, Zanele Muholi, Nandipha Mntambo, Victor Ehikhamenor, James Barnor, Olu Amoda, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Modupeola Fadugba, among others.

Committed to the growth and development of the African cultural and creative industries, Peterside-Schwebig has also launched additional platforms to support emerging African talent: ART X Live! - a dynamic showcase and accelerator for musicians and artists, and the ART X Prize - an annual art award and development program for emerging artists in Africa and its Diaspora.

In July 2018, Peterside led the visiting French President Emmanuel Macron through a special exhibition by ART X Lagos, of contemporary Nigerian art, as part of the 'Celebration of African Culture' hosted at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, to launch the African Cultural Season scheduled to hold in France in 2020. On August 18, 2018, Peterside spoke alongside other noteworthy speakers, to a sold-out audience during the TEDxLagos spotlight event at the Muson Centre. [14] She shared the stage with legal practitioner Supo Shasore, multidisciplinary designer Ade Olufeko, olympian Simidele Adeagbo and media personality Banky W. amongst others. [15]

Peterside sits on the board of Yinka Shonibare's non-profit artist residency, GAS Foundation, Anap Jets and EMOWAA (the Edo Museum of West African Art).

Adenrele Sonariwo is a Nigerian entrepreneur and art curator. She is the founder of the Rele Art Gallery on Military Street, Onikan, Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria as well as the Rele Art Gallery on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Rele Gallery is the first African contemporary art gallery to establish an outpost in Los Angeles. Sonariwo was the lead curator of the first Nigerian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. Alongside the Rele Art Gallery, Sonariwo is also the founding director of the Rele Arts Foundation. The foundation's projects include the annual young Contemporaries programme, which offers grants, mentorship, residences and training to a small group of emerging artists, an opportunity that results in an exhibition hosted at the gallery.

ART X Lagos is an art fair in Lagos, Nigeria. It is the leading international art fair in West Africa, founded and launched in 2016, and eight editions have been held so far. The ninth edition of the fair will take place between October 31 - November 3 2024.

Simidele Adeife Omonla Adeagbo, is a Nigerian skeleton racer who competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics. She is Nigeria and Africa's first female skeleton athlete. She was the first black female Olympian in the sport. In 2022, she won the woman's mono bob event in the 2022 EuroCup, held in Germany. In so doing, she became the first athlete from Africa to win an international sled race. Before competing in skeleton, Adeagbo competed in triple jump, last competing in 2008.

TEDxLagos is an independent TEDx event held annually in Lagos, Nigeria. Like other TEDx events, the event obtained a free license from TED to hold the conference, with organizers agreeing to follow certain principles. In 2018, the refreshed TEDxLagos hosted 12 speakers at the Muson Centre.

<i>The American Library</i> Contemporary installation art piece by Yinka Shonibare

The American Library is a 2018 contemporary art installation artwork piece by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare comprising 6,000 books of different sizes wrapped in Dutch wax printed cotton; 3,200 of the books carry names of immigrants, or the descendants of recent immigrants, to the United States who have had an impact on American culture. It was conceived as a reaction to Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric.
