Tom Cunanan is a Filipino American chef in Washington, D.C.
Filipino Americans are Americans of Filipino descent. The term Filipino American is sometimes shortened to Fil-Ams or Pinoy. The earliest appearance of the term Pinoy, was in a 1926 issue of the Filipino Student Bulletin. Some Filipinos believe that the term Pinoy was coined by Filipinos who came to the United States to distinguish themselves from Filipinos living in the Philippines.

Cunanan immigrated from the Philippines to the United States at the age of three, growing up in Hyattsville, Maryland as the sixth of seven children. [1] He went to Northwestern High School and through the Boys & Girls Club, he got a job as a dishwasher and bar-back at Corduroy, a restaurant on K Street in Washington, D.C. [2] After high school, he enrolled in the culinary school at The Art Institute of Washington. [1]

Hyattsville is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, and also a close, urban suburb of Washington, D.C. The population was 17,557 at the 2010 United States Census.
Cunanan gained experience in kitchens across D.C., including Jeffrey Buben's Vidalia, Nicholas Stefanelli's Bibiana, and Ardeo + Bardeo, where he was executive sous chef. [3] When Cunanan's mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, he worked with her to write down her recipes for Filipino cuisine, forming the basis for a catering business. [4]

Filipino cuisine is composed of the cuisines of more than a hundred distinct ethno-linguistic groups found throughout the Philippine archipelago. However, a majority of mainstream Filipino dishes that compose Filipino cuisine are from the cuisines of the Ilocano, Pangasinan, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, Visayan, Chavacano and Maranao ethno-linguistic groups. The style of food making and the food associated with it have evolved over many centuries from their Austronesian origins to a mixed cuisine of Indian, Chinese, Spanish and American influences, in line with the major waves of influence that had enriched the cultures of the archipelago, as well as others adapted to indigenous ingredients and the local palate.
In 2014, Cunanan met Filipino American restaurateurs Nick Pimentel and Genevieve Villamora, who were developing plans to open a Filipino restaurant. [3] With the help of a Kickstarter campaign, the three opened Bad Saint in 2015 in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. [4] [5]

Columbia Heights is known for its diversity, housing stock, major retailers, "[a] splendid panoramic view of downtown DC," and a thriving restaurant scene. In 2016, The Wall Street Journal recognized "Washington D.C.’s thriving Columbia Heights neighborhood."
Bad Saint was recognized by Bon Appétit magazine as one of the best new restaurants in the country in 2016. [6] Pete Wells of The New York Times gave the restaurant a three-star review, writing that "the food that Tom Cunanan and his cooks prepare under columns of wok smoke is richly compelling no matter how many prior run-ins you’ve had with Filipino food." [7] Eater named it one of the 38 essential restaurants in America in 2017. [8]
Bon Appétit is an American food and entertaining magazine that is published monthly by Condé Nast. It was started in 1956 and became a bimonthly magazine in December 1956 in Chicago. The magazine was acquired by M. Frank Jones in Kansas City, Missouri in 1965. Jones was owner, editor and publisher until 1970, when Bon Appétit was merged into the Pillsbury Company, who sold it to Knapp Communications, publishers of Architectural Digest, four years later. Condé Nast Publications, the current owners, purchased Knapp Communications in 1993. Its sister publication was Gourmet, before the latter was discontinued in October 2009. The magazine's headquarters, which had been in Los Angeles, CA, were moved to New York City in early 2011.

Andrés is the founder of World Central Kitchen, a non-profit devoted to providing meals in the wake of natural disasters. He was awarded a 2015 National Humanities Medal at a 2016 White House ceremony.

The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented by the James Beard Foundation to recognize culinary professionals in the United States, sometimes called the "Oscars" of the food world. The awards recognize chefs, restaurateurs, authors and journalists each year, scheduled around James Beard’s May 5th birthday. The media awards are presented at a dinner in New York City; the chef and restaurant awards were also presented in New York until 2015, when the Foundation’s annual gala moved to Chicago. Chicago will continue to host the Awards through 2027.

Rose's Luxury is a restaurant on Barracks Row in Washington, D.C., created by chef-owner Aaron Silverman. It is known for not taking reservations which creates long lines, such that a nearby bar's top cocktail is called 'Waiting for Rose's' and linewaiters are reported to make up to thirty dollars an hour waiting in line. President Barack Obama celebrated his 54th birthday at Rose's, after First Lady Michelle Obama previously ate at the restaurant.

Ashok Bajaj is a restaurateur based in Washington, DC. He is head of the Knightsbridge Restaurant Group. Bajaj was born in New Delhi. He left India in his early twenties, working in Sydney and in London, where he managed the Bombay Brasserie before moving the United States in 1988. He opened the Bombay Club, his first restaurant in Washington, in 1989 in his 20s, in initially working with an Australian partner, Nelson Blanks, though the two parted ways after a year and a half. His restaurant group has since expanded and now includes Rasika, for which chef Vikram Sunderam won a 2014 James Beard Award. Sunderam and Bajaj met in London working together at the Bombay Brasserie. With Sunderam and chef and cookbook author David Hagedorn, Bajaj is co-author of the cookbook, Rasika: Flavors of India, published by the Ecco imprint of HarperCollins.
