McTague was political editor of UnHerd . [2] He was a staff writer for The Atlantic . [3] He was political editor at the Independent on Sunday . [4] He has also worked for Politico , MailOnline and the Daily Mirror . [5]

In 2021, he was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for journalism. [6] In September 2025, he published Between the Waves: The Hidden History of a Very British Revolution 1945–2016. [7] The book discusses the history of the relationship between Britain and Europe. [8] The book was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. [9]
