The Tomb Raider nude code legend was an urban legend spread online beginning in 1996, purporting that the programmers of the Tomb Raider video game series had added a special cheat code that would turn the game's heroine, Lara Croft, completely naked during gameplay. [1] [2] [3]
The nude code Easter egg rumors began after release of the original 1996 Tomb Raider video game. [4] The rumors appeared in magazines, on online message boards and websites. [4]
Programmer of the original 1996 Tomb Raider game, Gavin Rummery, stated he was initially annoyed by the nude code rumors and in response added a fake Lara Croft shower scene to the end of Tomb Raider II where Lara shoots at the player for daring to spy on her. [4] Rummery also claimed that there was pressure from management to add the nude code to the game. [4]
While there never was an official nude code for the first 1996 Tom Raider game, there was a hacker made nude mod, called a nude patch or Nude Raider. [1] [2]
In 1998, printed and magazine ads for Tomb Raider III from Eidos and Core, the companies behind the series, showed a busty image of Lara Croft along with the text, "We improved everything you asked for, but sorry, still no nude code." [5] [6]
In 2024, shortly after the release of the remastering of the original trilogy of Tomb Raider games, PC Gamer magazine reported that it took under twelve hours for a topless Lara Croft video game mod to be uploaded to the internet. [1]
