Tomás Gomensoro is a village (pueblo) in the Artigas Department of northern Uruguay.

Artigas Department is the northernmost department of Uruguay, located in its northwestern region. Its capital is the city of Artigas, which borders on the Brazilian city of Quaraí. Artigas Department has an area of 11,928 square kilometres (4,605 sq mi), making it the fifth largest in the country. The population is 73,378 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census.

Location

It is located on a road that joins Route 3 with Route 30, about 27 kilometres (17 mi) southeast of Bella Unión. The railroad track Salto - Bella Unión passes through the village.

Route 3 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1975, it was assigned the name General José Artigas, the foremost national hero of Uruguay. It is one of the most important highways in the country along with Route 5, connecting the south coast near Rafael Perazza with Bella Unión in the extreme northwest. The road is approximately 592 kilometres (368 mi) in length.

History

Its earlier name was "Zanja Honda" and it was declared as "Pueblo" by the Act of Ley 3.455 on 3 May 1909. The village was then renamed after the acting President of Uruguay Tomás Gomensoro Albín.
