Tony L. Benford (born March 22, 1964) is an American basketball coach who is an assistant coach of the TCU Horned Frogs men's basketball team. [1]

Biography

A native of Hobbs, New Mexico — and 1982 graduate of Hobbs High School — Benford played under coach Ralph Tasker. Benford is married with four children. [2] He attended Texas Tech University, where he played on the Red Raiders basketball team for head coach Gerald Myers. While Benford played for Texas Tech, the 1984–85 Red Raiders team won both the Southwest Conference (SWC) regular season title and SWC Classic. The 1985–86 Red Raiders team won the SWC Classic, and Benford was named "Most Outstanding Player" in the conference tournament. [3] Benford was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the fourth round of the 1986 NBA draft before playing in the Dutch Basketball League.

Coaching career

Head coaching career

North Texas
On April 24, 2012, Benford was named men's basketball head coach of the North Texas Mean Green. [4] During his tenure at North Texas, he coached the team to a 62–95 overall record and 30–60 conference record. He was relieved of those duties March 5, 2017.

LSU
On March 8, 2019, Benford was named interim head coach of the LSU Tigers following the suspension of head coach Will Wade. [5] He coached LSU for the last regular season game of the 2018–19 season, 2019 SEC men's basketball tournament and 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. As interim head coach, Benford coached LSU to an overall 3–2 record. He went 1–0 in the regular season, 0–1 in the SEC Tournament and 2–1 in the NCAA Division I Tournament earning a berth in the Sweet Sixteen. On April 14, 2019, Will Wade was re-instated as head coach of LSU. [6]

Assistant coaching career

Benford's first coaching experience was as an assistant with the New Mexico Lobos. Later he served as an assistant with the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Nebraska Cornhuskers before joining the Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball team in 2008 as an assistant coach under Buzz Williams. [7] Benford was promoted to associate head coach at Marquette for the 2011–12 season.

In 2017, Benford became an assistant coach under Will Wade at LSU for the 2017–18 season. [8] Benford was named interim head coach at LSU towards the end of the 2018–19 season. [5] On April 14, 2019, he returned to his duties as assistant coach at LSU under Will Wade. [6] On April 24, 2019, Benford accepted an assistant coaching position at TCU. [9]

The TCU Horned Frogs men's basketball team represents Texas Christian University, located in Fort Worth, Texas, in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. Brooks "Bubba" Jennings is an American high school basketball coach and former college player and coach. He is best known for his collegiate playing career when he suited up for Texas Tech University between 1980 and 1985. During his time as a Red Raider, Jennings recorded 1,727 points, 378 assists and 149 steals. As a senior in 1984–85 he was honored with the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, a national award given to the best college men's basketball player who is 6'0" or shorter. At the end of the 2012–13 season, after having served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Jennings was fired as part of a wholesale change in direction of the men's basketball department at Texas Tech.

The 2017–18 Ole Miss Rebels men's basketball team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, their 108th basketball season. They were coached by Andy Kennedy for the first 27 games of the season before he left the position on February 19, 2018. The Rebels named assistant coach Tony Madlock interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Rebels played their second full season in The Pavilion at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi as members of the Southeastern Conference. They finished the season 12–20, 5–13 in SEC play to finish in last place. They lost in the first round of the SEC tournament to South Carolina.

The team's head coach was Will Wade, in his second season at LSU. Tony Benford also served as interim head coach for the last regular season game, 2019 SEC men's basketball tournament and 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. They played their home games at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as a member of the Southeastern Conference. They finished the season 28-7, 16-2 in SEC Play to finish as SEC regular season champions.. They lost in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament to Florida. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Yale and Maryland to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to Michigan State.
