James Anthony Brown OBE (born 5 January 1950 [1] ) is a Manx politician,former businessman and electrician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from 2006 until October 2011,when he stepped down from office following his decision to retire. [2]
Born on 5 January 1950,Brown was educated at Victoria Road Primary,Castletown and Castle Rushen High School and has since been an electrician,being the proprietor of Tony Brown Electrics in Castletown until its closure in 2010. He was elected as a member of Castletown Commissioners in 1976,becoming chairman in 1980 before being elected as the Castletown MHK in 1981 at his first attempt. In 2000,he was defeated in his attempt to become Speaker of the House of Keys by David Cannan but instead became the Deputy Speaker. Following the 2001 General Election,he was elected Speaker and in January 2002,Deputy President of Tynwald.
He was re-elected in November 2006 as MHK,beating Roy Redmayne by 915 votes to 335. He was again elected Speaker of the House of Keys after the general election in 2006. There was a great deal of rumour that he might run for Chief Minister,but when nominations were put forward his name was not on the list. Then followed an unsuccessful round of voting with neither Steve Rodan,John Shimmin nor David Cannan being elected. Nominations then reopened,with Tony Brown being the only candidate put forward. His nomination was confirmed by Tynwald on Thursday,14 December 2006 receiving 27 votes and the Lieutenant Governor appointed him Chief Minister later in the day. He then resigned the Speakership of the House of Keys as required by law.
Brown was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2013 Birthday Honours for public and political service. [3]
Brown has been married to Rachel (née Smith) since 1979,they have 2 children together and live in Brown's hometown of Castletown.
The House of Keys is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald,the parliament of the Isle of Man,the other branch being the Legislative Council.

He was also the first Chairman of the Executive Council,the forerunner of the present Chief Minister of the Isle of Man,from 1961 to 1967. This made him the first Manx person to fulfil an executive role on the Isle of Man. Previously the Lieutenant Governor had exercised all executive power. He was a keen supporter of Scouting on the Isle of Man,often offering his own lands for camping.

Stephen Charles Rodan MLC is a Manx politician who served as the President of Tynwald from 2016 to 2021 and is a former Minister of the Isle of Man Government and former MHK for the constituency of Garff. He was first elected to the seat in a by-election in 1995.
John David Qualtrough Cannan was the Member of the House of Keys for Michael and Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority. He was the son of former Chaplain of the House of Keys,Rev Canon Charles Cannan. He was educated at King William's College and was a businessman in the tea and rubber industry before going into politics. In the 1970s he was a Conservative Party councillor in England before returning to the Isle of Man and becoming the Michael MHK in 1982. He was elected Speaker of the House of Keys in 2000,and remained as such until the 2001 General Election. He retired from the House of Keys at the 2011 General Election.

Jane Pearl Poole-Wilson,MHK is a Manx politician and solicitor. She was elected to the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man in 2017 to fill a casual vacancy and was re-elected for a full five-year term in 2018. However she was elected to the House of Keys for the constituency of Middle in the 2021 Manx general election and thus forfeited her seat on the Legislative Council. She was immediately appointed by new Chief Minister Alfred Cannan as Minister for Justice and Home Affairs. She was also appointed as Deputy Chief Minister.
General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 23 September 2021. A record ten women were elected,twice as many as the five elected at the previous election. For the first time,in two constituencies,both elected MHKs were women. Four government ministers failed to be re-elected.
William 'Bill' Shimmins is a Scottish-born Manx politician. He represented the constituency of Middle in the House of Keys until 2021,having been first elected in 2016.
Alexander John Allinson is an English-born Manx physician and politician who serves as an independent member of the House of Keys,representing Ramsey since 2016. Allinson serves on the Council of Ministers as the current Minister for the Treasury,having been appointed to the role in May 2022 by Alfred Cannan,the chief minister of the Isle of Man.
