Tony Gibson (born October 12, 1972) is an American football coach who is the head coach of the Marshall Thundering Herd. He previously served as defensive coordinator for West Virginia and NC State.
Gibson attended Glenville State from 1991 to 1994 where he played as a defensive back, winning two WVIAC championships.
Gibson got his start in college coaching at his alma mater as a defensive backs coach. In 2001, he broke into the FBS ranks as the defensive backs coach at West Virginia, a job he would hold until 2007. In 2008, when West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez was hired to the same job at Michigan, he brought Gibson with him to serve as assistant head coach, special teams and defensive backs coach. Gibson, was fired from Michigan alongside Rodriguez following the 2010 season. [2] He then had one year stints at Pitt and Arizona in a variety of roles before returning to West Virginia in 2013 as the safeties coach and was subsequently promoted to defensive coordinator in 2014. [3] Following West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen's departure in 2019, new head coach Neal Brown chose not to keep Gibson as the team's defensive coordinator. [4] In 2019, Gibson was hired as the defensive coordinator for NC State. [5]
On December 8, 2024, it was announced that Gibson was hired as head coach at Marshall, replacing Charles Huff. [6]
Gibson and his wife have two children.

David Wannstedt is a former American football coach. He has been the head coach of the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He was also the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh football team from 2005 to 2010. He also was a long-time assistant to Jimmy Johnson with the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Hurricanes, and Oklahoma State Cowboys as well as an associate of Johnson when both were assistants at the University of Pittsburgh.
Richard Alan Rodriguez, also known as Rich Rod, is an American college football coach and former player. He is the current head football coach at West Virginia University, his second stint with his alma mater. Rodriguez previously was the head football coach at Salem University, Glenville State College, the University of Michigan, the University of Arizona, and Jacksonville State University. In 2011, Rodriguez worked as an analyst for CBS Sports.
Michael Todd Graham is an American college football coach and former player. He was most recently the head football coach at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (2020–2021). William L. Stewart, nicknamed "Stew", was an American football coach. He was named interim head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers after Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan in December 2007. After leading the Mountaineers to a 48–28 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl, he was named the school's 32nd head football coach on January 3, 2008. Stewart resigned in the summer of 2011. He was previously the head coach of Virginia Military Institute for three seasons.
Ruffin Horne McNeill Jr. is an American football coach and former player who currently serves as the special assistant to the head coach at NC State University. He previously served as the assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach at the University of Oklahoma and the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at the University of Virginia. McNeill also served as the head coach of the East Carolina Pirates from 2010 to 2015. Before being named head coach of the Pirates, McNeill served the Texas Tech Red Raiders as an interim head coach, assistant head coach, special teams coordinator, and linebackers coach. On December 28, 2009, he was named interim head coach of the Red Raiders following the suspension and later firing of head coach Mike Leach. He served in the position until the hiring of Tommy Tuberville, who subsequently released him as defensive coordinator.
The Marshall Thundering Herd football team is an intercollegiate varsity sports program of Marshall University. The team represents the university as a member of the Sun Belt Conference East Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, playing at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level.
John "Doc" Holliday is an American former college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Marshall University from 2010 to 2020, compiling a record of 85–54.
Neal Brown is an American college football coach and former player. He was most recently the head football coach at West Virginia University from 2019–2024. Brown was previously the head coach at Troy University from 2015 to 2018. Brown also previously served as the offensive coordinator at Troy (2008–2009), Texas Tech University (2010–2012), and the University of Kentucky (2013–2014).
Chuck Heater is an American football coach and former player. He was a running back for the University of Michigan from 1972 to 1974 and finished his playing career as the fifth all-time leading rusher in Michigan Wolverines football history. Heater has been an assistant football coach at ten universities since 1976. He has been affiliated with College Football Hall of Fame coaches Bo Schembechler, Earle Bruce, and Lou Holtz. He has been on coaching staffs of national championship teams at Notre Dame (1988) and Florida.
Everett Rowe Withers is an American football coach and former player. He was the defensive coordinator at FIU, and was the defensive backs coach for the New York Giants and as the head coach for the Texas State Bobcats. Withers served as head football coach at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the 2011 season, at James Madison University in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and as the interim head coach at Temple following Stan Drayton's firing in 2024.
George Barlow is an American football coach who is currently the secondary coach at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He was the interim head coach for the University of New Mexico Lobos. He was elevated from defensive coordinator to interim head coach following the firing of Mike Locksley on September 25, 2011. He coached the Lobos for their final eight games in 2011. He has also coached at Vanderbilt, NC State, and Oklahoma.
James Walter Hopson is an American college football coach and former player. He is the cornerbacks coach for the University of South Alabama, a position he has held since 2023. He has been a head coach at Southern Miss and Alcorn State. In the latter role, he was the first white head football coach in the history of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, an organization composed of historically black colleges and universities. Hopson has also served as an assistant coach at Tulane, Delta State, LSU, Florida, Marshall, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Michigan, and Memphis.
The 2018 Texas State Bobcats football team represented Texas State University in the 2018 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bobcats played their home games at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, and competed in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference. They were led by third-year head coach Everett Withers. They finished the season 3–9, 1–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in last place in the West Division.
