Shooting sports is a group of competitive and recreational sporting activities involving proficiency tests of accuracy, precision and speed in shooting — the art of using ranged weapons, mainly small arms and bows/crossbows.
The ISSF World Shooting Championships are governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. World Shooting Championships began in 1897, after the successful 1896 Summer Olympics, and although the ISSF was not founded until 1907, these early competitions are still seen by the organization as the beginning of a continuous row of championships. By this logic, the 2006 competition in Zagreb was called the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships. These championships, including all ISSF shooting events, are held every four years since 1954. For the shotgun events only, there is an additional World Championship competition in odd-numbered years. These extra competitions are not numbered. In running target, there will be World Championships in Olympic years.
Norway competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. 69 competitors, 44 men and 25 women, took part in 42 events in 11 sports.
Jaysuma Saidy Ndure is a Gambian-Norwegian sprinter. He is of Serer heritage of the noble Ndure family. In 2002, he went to Oslo, aged 18 and settled with his father who has lived in Norway since the 1970s. Having changed nationality from Gambia to Norway in 2006, he holds Norwegian records in the 100 and holds both the Gambian and Norwegian records in the 200 metres, and is the seventh and fourth fastest European of all times on the two distances. He has a bronze medal from the African Championships and several top-three placings in IAAF Golden League meets and the IAAF World Athletics Final.
Tor Håkon Holte is a Norwegian cross-country skier who competed from 1982 to 1987. He won the 4 × 10 km relay gold at the 1985 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld and finished ninth in the 50 km event at those same championships.

The 1961 World Shotgun and Running Target Championships were held in Oslo, Norway. While separate world championships in the shotgun events had become traditional, this was the first time the competition also included the 100 metre running deer events. These had been Norwegian specialties but were now dominated by the superpowers, leaving the host country without medals.
Men's 50 metre running target made its final Olympic appearance at the 1988 Summer Olympics. It was also the only time the 30 slow runs and 30 fast runs were followed by a ten-shot final for the top four contestants. Gennadi Avramenko and Tor Heiestad established a new Olympic record of 591 points, and Heiestad won the final, where Avramenko was also surpassed by Huang Shiping.
The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, commonly known by the acronym UIPM, has been the international governing body of modern pentathlon since its foundation in London in 1948. Its headquarters are in Monte-Carlo, Monaco, and it has 115 national federation members. Modern pentathlon was introduced at the fifth Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912, comprising the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, which embraced the spirit of its ancient counterpart.
Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal is a Norwegian middle-, long-distance and steeplechase runner. She won bronze medals in the 10,000 metres at the 2016 European Championships, and for the 3000 m steeplechase at the 2018 European Championships. Grøvdal earned several medals at the European Cross Country Championships.
Tor Torgersen was a Norwegian long-distance runner. He specialized in the longest track distances, 5000 and 10,000 metres, as well as cross-country running and from around 1960 the marathon, in which he also competed at that year's Olympic Games. On the track he became national champion in two events in 1959, with an additional four titles taken outside the track. He was later a national team coach in swimming.
Øistein Saksvik was a Norwegian long-distance runner. He specialized in the 5,000-metre and the 10,000-metre runs, as well as in cross country running. At the 1952 Olympic Games, he competed in the 5,000-meter run. Saksvik became the Norwegian champion twenty times, a national record. In addition, he captured three Norwegian records in long-distance running from Martin Stokken, and held onto them for some years each. In the late-1950s, Saksvik's dominance in Norwegian long-distance running was eclipsed by Tor Torgersen and fellow Ranheim club member Ernst "Kruska" Larsen, later Thor Helland.
Lars Martin Kaupang is a Norwegian middle distance runner. He specialized in the 1500 metres, in which he held the Norwegian record from 1976 to 2012.
Sverre Øyvind Sørnes is a Norwegian long-distance runner who specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Alf Ramsøy was a Norwegian long-distance runner, cross-country skier, actor and farmer.
John H. Larsen Jr. is a Norwegian former sports shooter. He competed in the 50 metre running target event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. His father, John Larsen, also represented Norway at the Olympics in the shooting competition.
Emil Martinsson, sometimes known as Emil Andersson is a Swedish running target sport shooter who won several medals at the ISSF World Shooting Championships.
