Roque Gastón Máspoli Arbelvide was a Uruguayan football player and coach. He was the goalkeeper for the Uruguay national team that won the 1950 World Cup. He was also the head coach for the Uruguayan team that won the 1980 Mundialito.

Atilio Genaro Ancheta Weigel is a former footballer from Uruguay, who played for the national team at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. He was a defender and spent most of his career with Grêmio Football Porto-Alegrense, appearing in 164 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A matches. In 1973, he received the Brazilian Bola de Ouro award.
The South American Championship of Champions was a football competition played in Santiago, Chile in 1948 and the first continental-wide football tournament in South America. Hosted and organized by Chilean club Colo-Colo, with the aid of then president of CONMEBOL Luis Valenzuela, it was played between February 11 and March 17. Brazil's Vasco da Gama won the competition after earning the most points in the round-robin tournament.

The Copa Ricardo Aldao, popularly called Campeonato Rioplatense and Copa Río de La Plata, was an official AFA-AUF football club competition contested annually, albeit irregularly, between the league champions of Argentina and Uruguay. The trophy was donated by Argentine football executive Ricardo Aldao (1863–1956), who would later become president of the Argentine Football Association.

The Uruguayan Clásico is the most important rivalry in Uruguayan football and one of the best on the American continent. It is contested between the two most popular football clubs in Uruguay, Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol, both based in Montevideo. As of 2018, the two teams have won 96 of the 115 Uruguayan Primera División titles, and many international tournaments, including a combined eight Copa Libertadores. The first meeting between the two teams was at the turn of the century in 1900, making it one of the oldest football rivalries outside Great Britain. CURCC won the first match 2–0.

The Campeonato Uruguayo Federal de Básquetbol (CFB) was the top-tier level men's basketball national club competition in Uruguay. It was organized by the Uruguayan Basketball Federation (FUBB). It existed from 1915 to 2003, when it was replaced by the newly formed Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol (LUB). The worst performing teams of each season of the competition were relegated down to the second-tier level Segunda de Ascenso, which itself was replaced by the Torneo Metropolitano, in 2004.
