City council

On October 25, 2010, a record number of women were elected to council, with 15 female councillors comprising one third of all council members. [1]

The election was held in conjunction with those held in other municipalities in the province of Ontario. Candidate registration opened on January 4, 2010 and ended on September 10. Advance polls were open October 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12, 13, 16 and 17.

Sarah Doucette is a Canadian politician, who served on Toronto City Council from 2010 to 2018. In the 2010 city council election, Doucette defeated Bill Saundercook in Ward 13, Parkdale–High Park. Doucette was born in Winchester, Hampshire but grew up on the Isle of Wight, in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Doucette came to Canada in 1980. She and her husband have two children. They have lived in the Swansea neighbourhood of Toronto for fifteen years. Doucette worked at the Swansea Town Hall since 2004 and in 2008, she became executive assistant to the executive director. To run for city council she had to take a leave of absence from her job. The 2010 election race was her first campaign. She was re-elected in 2014, but decided not to run in the 2018 election.

Gary Crawford is a Canadian politician, who was elected to Toronto City Council in the 2010 city council election to succeed Brian Ashton in Ward 36. He held onto the seat in the 2014 municipal elections. As councillor, Crawford sat as the Budget Chief (2014-2023). He served on numerous committees including Budget, Planning and Growth, Economic Development and the Executive Committee. He also served on City Boards and Agencies including East Metro Youth Centre, Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, Harbourfront Centre, St. Lawrence Centre for the Performing Arts, the Toronto Centre for the Arts and the Toronto Arts Council. He has chaired the Mayor’s Task Force on the Arts, the Theatres Working Group and Co-chaired the Film Board.

Jon Burnside is a Canadian politician and former police officer who was elected to represent Ward 16 Don Valley East on Toronto City Council following the 2022 municipal election. Burnside was the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) from 2022 to 2023. He previously represented Ward 26 Don Valley West from 2014 to 2018.
