Ward 20 Scarborough Southwest is a municipal ward in the Scarborough section of Toronto, Ontario, Canada represented by Parthi Kandavel who won the by-election on November 30, 2023. [2] The seat was temporarily vacant between July 26, 2023 and November 30, 2023 following the resignation of Gary Crawford [3] to run in the 2023 Scarborough—Guildwood provincial by-election. [4] It covers the area of the City of Toronto bounded by Eglinton Avenue East to the north, Lake Ontario to the south, Victoria Park Avenue to the west, and Markham Road to the east. [5] It contains the neighbourhoods of Birch Cliff, Birch Cliff Heights, Clairlea, Cliffcrest, Cliffside, Fallingbrook, Hunt Club, Oakridge, Scarborough Junction, and the western half of Scarborough Village. The ward was created for the 2018 municipal elections when newly elected Premier of Ontario Doug Ford introduced legislation to require that Toronto's municipal elections use the same ridings as it does for provincial and federal elections. [7]

From 2000 to 2018, Scarborough Southwest was represented on city council by Wards 35 (northern half) and 36 (southern half). From 1998 to 2000 the area generally corresponded to Ward 13 (Scarborough Bluffs) on City Council, and returned two members. From 1988 to 1997 Scarborough Bluffs was represented on Metropolitan Toronto Council until Scarborough's amalgamation into the city.

2023 by-election

Following the resignation of Gary Crawford to run in the 2023 Scarborough—Guildwood provincial by-election, a by-election was called in the ward, and was held on November 30 with Parthi Kandavel being elected as the new incoming councillor. [8]

Neethan Shanmugarajah (Neethan Shan) (Tamil: நீதன் சண்முகராஜா, romanized: Nītaṉ Caṇmukarājā; born December 24, 1978), is a Canadian politician who represented Ward 42 Scarborough—Rouge River on Toronto City Council from February 2017 to November 2018. Shan was the first Tamil Canadian to sit on Toronto's City Council. Shan is currently the Vice-Chair of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Shan was elected to the TDSB in 2016 and again in 2022. Shan has sought public office 13 times since 2003; 8 of which were municipally and provincially, 5. He won 4 times: YRDSB Trustee in 2006, TDSB Trustee in 2016, Toronto City Councillor in 2017 and TDSB Trustee in 2022.

Stop the New Sex-Ed Agenda is a minor social conservative provincial political party in Ontario, Canada. It was founded by Queenie Yu, who also serves as its leader. It is a single issue party with a platform based on being in opposition to the updated sexual education curriculum for Ontario public schools implemented in 2015.
