Toshirō Mutō (武藤 敏郎, Mutō Toshirō, born July 2, 1943) is the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan.

Early life

Mutō was born in Urawa, Saitama Prefecture and graduated from Kaisei Academy High School in Nishi Nippori, Arakawa, Tokyo. He attended the University of Tokyo, graduating from the Department of Law in 1966. In the same year, he joined the Ministry of Finance.

Career

Mutō served overseas at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. In 2000, he rose to Administrative Vice-Minister of Finance, and in 2003 joined the Bank of Japan as deputy governor.

On March 7, 2008, the government of Japan announced that it planned to nominate him for promotion to replace Toshihiko Fukui as governor. [1] Fukui's term was to expire on March 19. His nomination was rejected.

Since January 2014, Mutō has served as the Director General/CEO of the Tokyo Organising Committee for the 2020 Summer Olympics. [2] [3]

In August 2021, Muto received a Silver Olympic Order. [4] [5]

The closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics took place in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo for about two and a half hours from 20:00 (JST) on 8 August 2021. The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, which was postponed for one year due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, was held without spectators. The scale was also reduced compared to past ceremonies as athletes were required to leave the Olympic Village 48 hours after their competitions finished.

During the closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the flag bearers for the 205 National Olympic Committee's (NOCs) and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team entered the Olympic Stadium. The flags of each country were not necessarily carried by the same flag bearer as in the opening ceremony. Due to COVID-19 related protocols, athletes had to leave Japan within 48 hours from completion of their final event, leaving some countries without representation during the closing ceremony. Flags of the countries without athletes present were instead carried by volunteers.
