Town Close School, established in 1932 is a co-educational independent preparatory school located in Norwich, England. Set on a beautiful 15 acre woodland site, the pupils at Town Close benefit from unrivalled facilities. Subject specific space include, a Sports Hall, Performance Hall, Swimming Pool, DT Room, Art Room, Computer Rooms, Library, Science Laboratories. The extended sports areas include Main Field and Fairfield and an Astro-turf, all only a short walk away. In 2020 the school won the Tes Independent Prep School of the Year. [1] Many pupils go on to attend Norwich School and Norwich High School with some attending Oundle, Stowe, and Greshams. [2]
Sport plays a major part of school life at Town Close. It is an area in which children gain self-confidence, develop all aspects of physical fitness and learn a range of skills and techniques in a wide variety of sporting activities. It is also a medium through which many life skills are developed. These include: team work, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, respect for others, communication and fair play. An understanding of the physical benefits of regular exercise is developed to promote sport as an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
The school has a playing field situated further out from the city on the Newmarket Road. Norwich City Football Club played at this Newmarket Road site from 1902 to 1908, with a record attendance of 10,366 against Sheffield Wednesday in a second round FA Cup match in 1908. [3] Following a dispute over the conditions of renting the Newmarket Road ground, in 1908, the club moved to a new home, in a converted disused chalk pit in Rosary Road which became known as "The Nest". [4]
