The Trade Union International of Workers in Tourism and Hotels (HOTOUR) is a trade union international affiliated with the World Federation of Trade Unions

History

HOTOUR was founded a conference in Athens December 1–2, 2009 attended by 68 trade unionists from 17 countries. [1] It held its third congress in Alexandria in February 2020. As of 2020, the international was led by general secretary Mamdouh Mohamady Mohamed, [2] while its president was Janaka Adikari. [3]

Organization

The "superior authority" is the International Congress which is regularly held every five years, but periodical congresses may be called by the Executive Council. The Executive Council is elected by the Congress by secret ballot and includes the Chairmen, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary and five vice-presidents representing the continents. It also includes the "Committee of economic control that consists of the secretary of the economics and two more members that are elected of the international congress." The Executive Secretariat is composed of the "committees of social insurance and health at work, Hygiene and Safety, the international relations". [4] The federation's seat is at 3 Glastsonos street Omonia 106 77 Stoa Flexi 7th floor, Athens. [5]

George Mavrikos

George Mavrikos is the General Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) in Athens, Greece. He is a leading member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), and former member of Greek parliament. He is largely credited for having led the successful efforts to halt the decline of the World Federation of Trade Unions since the fall of the Soviet Union. Since his election as general secretary during the congress in Havana in 2005, the World Federation of Trade Unions has seen an increase in its number of affiliates and has successfully managed to recruit several trade union of importances in Western Europe.

International Organization of Journalists Soviet-era press organisation

The International Organization of Journalists was an international press workers' organization based in Prague, Czechoslovakia, during the Cold War. It was one of dozens of front organizations launched by the Soviet Union in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was controlled in Prague by the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, with the assistance of KGB agents. Secretary is a title often used in organizations to indicate a person having a certain amount of authority, power, or importance in the organization. Secretaries announce important events and communicate to the organization. The term is derived from the Latin word secernere, "to distinguish" or "to set apart", the passive participle meaning "having been set apart", with the eventual connotation of something private or confidential, as with the English word secret. A secretarius was a person, therefore, overseeing business confidentially, usually for a powerful individual.
