Troy Richard Tanner (born October 31, 1963) is an American former volleyball player and Olympic gold medalist. He was a member of the United States men's national volleyball team that won the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. [1]

Early life

Tanner attended Los Altos High School in Hacienda Heights, California. [1]

College

Tanner played college volleyball for Pepperdine University after being recruited by legendary coach Marv Dunphy. [2] He started as a setter and then was switched to outside hitter. [2] Tanner helped the Waves win NCAA Championships in 1985 and 1986, defeating USC on each occasion. [3]

Tanner was inducted into the Pepperdine Hall of Fame in 2011. [3]

Club volleyball

After his Olympic appearance in 1988, Tanner played in the professional indoor leagues in Italy, Croatia, and Japan. [3]

Beach volleyball

From 1988 to 1999, Tanner played beach volleyball primarily on the AVP tour. [4] He was the AVP Rookie of the Year in 1992. [4] In his career as a beach volleyball player, he won $470,000 in prizes. [4]

Coaching

Tanner served an assistant volleyball coach for the Brigham Young University men's volleyball team. [1] He also coached Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh during their gold medal run in the 2008 Olympics. [1]

Personal life

Tanner's father, Rolf Tanner, was a sports enthusiast and encouraged his sons to compete at a high level in their respective sports. [2]

Tanner is also the owner of the Tstreet Volleyball Club, which trains in Irvine, California. [5] [1] Troy is married to Desiree Tanner and has three children: sons Carson and Riley, and daughter Bailey. [6] Troy's hobbies include surfing, playing guitar, and ping pong. [6]

Dain Blanton is an American former beach volleyball player who won the gold medal in beach volleyball in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney with partner Eric Fonoimoana. He returned to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with partner Jeff Nygaard, becoming the first two-time U.S. male beach volleyball Olympian. He is the current head coach for the University of Southern California's women's beach volleyball team, having won 6 national titles with the program.

Jeff Wayne Nygaard is an American volleyball coach and former volleyball player. He was a member of the United States national indoor team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He was a middle blocker. He also played beach volleyball at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with partner Dain Blanton.

Douglas Scott "Dusty" Dvorak is an American former volleyball player. He was a member of the United States national volleyball team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He is regarded as one of the greatest setters of all time.
