Tulane University, officially the Tulane University of Louisiana, is a private research university in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Founded as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 by a cohort of medical doctors, it became a comprehensive public university in the University of Louisiana in 1847. The institution became private under the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884 and 1887. The Tulane University Law School and Tulane University Medical School are, respectively, the 12th oldest law school and 15th oldest medical school in the United States.

Founded in 1976 and now located on Fifth Avenue near Union Square in Lower Manhattan, the school is named for Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo. Cardozo graduated its first class in 1979. An LL.M. program was established in 1998. Cardozo is nondenominational and has a secular curriculum, in contrast to some of Yeshiva University's undergraduate programs. Around 320 students begin the J.D. program per year, of whom about 57% are women. In addition, there are about 60–70 LL.M. students each year.

He is an authority on the legal systems of Russia, other members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Mongolia. He was also involved in the fields of public and private international law. He is currently 83 years old and has written 4 books about the Russian Law.
The Tulane Environmental Law Journal (TELJ) is a legal periodical produced and edited by students at the Tulane University Law School. The journal has been recognized as among the top fifteen environmental law journals. Articles are written by professors, practitioners, and Tulane Law students. It was founded in 1988. Oliver Houck serves as the Journal's faculty adviser.
