Turkey Creek is a stream spanning Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas, within the Kansas City metropolitan area of the United States. [2] It is a tributary of the Kansas River, with its mouth near downtown Kansas City, Kansas. [3] It is not the Turkey Creek in Dickinson County, Kansas.

In 1882, a local newspaper summarized: "Turkey Creek, a live, impetuous stream, meanders at will through the place seemingly priding itself on its independence in designating its own path, regardless of the points on the compass, or the predominating requirements of this expeditious age in economizing time and space by taking air line courses." [4]

History

In the early 1800s, Turkey Creek was part of French Bottoms, settled by rows of narrow strips of farms owned by French-speaking pioneering settlers of French-Canadian and tribal mixed culture. [5] In 1823, pioneering American surveyor Joseph C. Brown documented the creek's mouth at the Missouri River, about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Kaw Point, with a watershed west of the Missouri state line and about 20 miles (32 km) into the Indian Territory. [6]

The stream has always threatened the area with countless floods through history, sometimes being flooded by the Kansas River [6] [7] or flooding into Indian Creek. [8] Several floods in the early 1900s prompted a 1918-1920 engineering project creating a flood channel to the Kansas River by boring a 28 by 32 foot wide and 1,450 feet (440 m) long tunnel through the bluff called Greystone Heights. [7]

Turkey Creek was part of areawide disasters including the all-time record Great Flood of 1844, which relocated the stream's mouth from the Missouri River westward to the Kaw (Kansas) River and erased all human settlement of the French Bottoms. [6] Another was the Great Flood of 1951.[ citation needed ] On June 10, 1993, during the Great Flood of 1993, Turkey Creek's tunnel beneath Interstate 35 was capable of diverting only 8,000 cubic feet (230 m3) per second but the stream peaked at about 20,000 cubic feet (570 m3) per second, flooding Southwest Boulevard. An area flood in 1998 pushed the creek to that same water flow, [7] causing more than US$50 million in damage. [9]

The creek directly floods several cities in the Upper Turkey Creek Basin, for which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed complicated flood control deployments and ongoing proposals. [9] Affected localities include the Merriam, Kansas drainage district, receiving over $23 million in federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding in 2022, where one municipal objective is to eliminate the need for downtown businesses to buy flood insurance. [10]

The $529 million, multi-decade, Kansas City Levee Project is complemented by the Turkey Creek Flood Damage Reduction Project. [7] As of 2023, the latter had spent about $160 million [7] [8] of combined funding from Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO), the local Unified Government, and the federal government. [11] It can handle at least 18,000 to 20,000 cubic feet (570 m3) of water per second, equivalent to one normal day of the Missouri River [8] This includes new flood drainage, where the KC Water department of KCMO bored the horizontal tunnels at a rate of 4 feet (1.2 m) per day to install six new storm pipes of 96 inches (2.4 m) diameter each, delicately beneath the busy railroad, in preparation for construction by the Corps. [11] The key was reportedly to open the channel from 45 feet wide to 100 feet (30 m) wide for 2 miles (3.2 km). [8]

The final 1,261 feet (384 m) of the stream runs through a tunnel constructed by the Corps beneath a natural limestone shelf. [12] [13]

Big Bend Dam is a major embankment rolled-earth dam on the Missouri River in Central South Dakota, United States, creating Lake Sharpe. The dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Pick-Sloan Plan for Missouri watershed development authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944. Construction began in 1959 and the embankment was completed in July 1963. Power generation began at the facility in 1964 and the entire complex was completed in 1966 at a total cost of $107 million. The hydroelectric plant generates 493,300 kilowatts of electricity at maximum capacity, with an annual production of 969 million kilowatt hours, and meets peak-hour demand for power within the Missouri River Basin.

The Oahe Dam is a large earthen dam on the Missouri River, just north of Pierre, South Dakota, United States. Begun in 1948 and opened in 1962, the dam creates Lake Oahe, the fourth-largest man-made reservoir in the United States. The reservoir stretches 231 miles (372 km) up the course of the Missouri to Bismarck, North Dakota. The dam's power plant provides electricity for much of the north-central United States. It is named for the Oahe Indian Mission established among the Lakota Sioux in 1874.

The Big River is a tributary of the Meramec River in east-central Missouri. The river rises in western Iron County near the summit of Johnson Mountain just north of Missouri Route 32 and approximately 3.5 miles southeast of the community of Enough. It flows through Washington, Saint Francois, and Jefferson counties. It forms part of the boundary between Jefferson and Saint Francois counties and also part of the boundary between Jefferson and Washington counties. It empties into the Meramec River opposite Eureka where the Meramec forms the border between Jefferson and Saint Louis counties. The river flows through Washington State Park, St. Francois State Park, and the Lead Belt mining district. In mid-July 1951, heavy rains led to a great rise of water in the Kansas River, Missouri River, and other surrounding areas of the Central United States. Flooding occurred in the Kansas, Neosho, Marais Des Cygnes, and Verdigris river basins. The damage in June and July 1951 across eastern Kansas and Missouri exceeded $935 million. The flooding killed 17 people and displaced 518,000.

Esopus Creek is a 65.4-mile-long (105.3 km) tributary of the Hudson River that drains the east-central Catskill Mountains in the U.S. state of New York. From its source at Winnisook Lake on the slopes of Slide Mountain, the Catskills' highest peak, it flows across Ulster County to the Hudson at Saugerties. Many tributaries extend its watershed into neighboring Greene County and a small portion of Delaware County. Midway along its length, it is impounded at Olive Bridge to create Ashokan Reservoir, the first of several built in the Catskills as part of New York City's water supply system. Its own flow is supplemented 13 miles (21 km) above the reservoir by the Shandaken Tunnel, which carries water from the city's Schoharie Reservoir into the creek.

Tuttle Creek Lake is a reservoir on the Big Blue River 5 miles (8 km) north of Manhattan, in the Flint Hills region of northeast Kansas. It was built and is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers for the primary purpose of flood control. Secondary functions of the project include release of water stores to maintain barge traffic on the Mississippi River during seasons of drought, maintenance of a multi-use conservation pool for fish and wildlife enhancement and recreation, and release of sufficient water in droughts to maintain water quality for downstream communities.

The Eklutna River is approximately 11.8 miles (19.0 km) long and is located in the Southcentral region of the U.S. state of Alaska. A portion of the river flows through a canyon up to 400 feet (120 m) deep, emptying into the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet approximately 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Anchorage. This degraded anadromous stream historically originated from Eklutna Lake, which itself is fed by Eklutna Glacier. Eklutna River is now fed primarily by groundwater before being joined by Thunderbird Creek. Thunderbird Creek, which enters the south bank about 1 km (0.62 mi) upstream from where the river exits the canyon and forms an alluvial fan. Due to water impoundments on the Eklutna River for power generation, Thunderbird Creek is currently the main source of water in the lower portion of the Eklutna River. The river is located entirely within the limits of the Municipality of Anchorage.

Abrahams Creek is a tributary of the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately 10.7 miles (17.2 km) long and flows through Franklin Township, Dallas Township, Kingston Township, West Wyoming, Wyoming, and Forty Fort. The watershed of the creek has an area of 17.4 square miles (45 km2) and occupies portions of nine municipalities in northeastern Luzerne County. Fulmer Creek is an 11.5-mile-long (18.5 km) river that flows into the Mohawk River in Mohawk, New York. The creek derives its name from the "Fulmer" family, who bought land through the Burnetsfield patent of 1725, in which lands on the present village site were granted out.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Batavia Kill (Schoharie Creek tributary)</span> River in New York, United States

Batavia Kill is a 21-mile-long (34 km) tributary of Schoharie Creek, that flows across the towns of Windham, Ashland and Prattsville in the U.S. state of New York. Its waters reach the Hudson River via Schoharie Creek and the Mohawk River. Since it drains into the Schoharie upstream of Schoharie Reservoir, it is part of the New York City water supply system. From the source to Maplecrest, Batavia Kill drains the northern slopes of the Blackhead Mountains, which include Thomas Cole Mountain, Black Dome, and Blackhead Mountain, the fourth-, third-, and fifth-highest peaks in the Catskills, respectively.
