Tynagh GAA was a hurling club located in Tynagh, County Galway, Ireland. It was a member of the Galway branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The club was solely concerned with the game of hurling.

History

Located in the parish of Tynagh, on the Galway-Tipperary border, the Tynagh club was founded in the years immediately following the establishment of the GAA in 1884. The club contested the Galway SHC finals in 1889 and 1896, but lost out on both occasions. Between 1900 and 1906 there was no team in Tynagh but several players played with the neighbouring Duniry club.

Hurling eventually returned to the club, with Tynagh contesting every final between 1918 and 1928. [1] The club won the title in 1920, 1922, 1923, 1925 and 1928, which was a technical five-in-a-row as the intervening finals were not held or the entire championship was cancelled. Tynagh went into a period of decline following this golden age. Galway SHC semi-finals were reached in the late 1940s, however, it was 1971 before the club enjoyed its next success when the Galway JHC titles was won. Players from the nearby Abbey/Duniry club joined Tynagh to form a senior and intermediate team in 1972 before once again operating as single entity clubs from 1976. [2] [3]

Tynagh won the Galway IHC title in 1987 to once again secure senior status. [4] A decline in population resulted in Tynagh and Abbey/Duniry amalgamating at underage level in 1996. Both clubs amalgamated at adult level to create the new Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry club in 2004. [5]

James Power was an Irish hurler who played as a full-back for the Galway senior teams.

Michael Dervan was an Irish hurler. Usually lining out at corner-back, he was a member of the Galway team that won the 1923 All-Ireland Championship.

James Ignatius Harney was an Irish hurler who played for his local club Tynagh and at senior level for the Galway county team from 1920 until 1934.

The Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking intermediate clubs in the county of Galway in Ireland. It is the second tier overall in the entire Galway hurling championship system.

The Galway county hurling team represents Galway in hurling and is governed by Galway GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship and the National Hurling League. It formerly competed in the abolished Connacht Senior Hurling Championship, winning the last title in 1999.

The 2022 Galway Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the Galway Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment in 1887. St Thomas' won their fifth consecutive title in a row after defeating Loughrea in a replay at Pearse Stadium on 27 November.

The 2024 Galway Senior Hurling Championship was the 127th staging of the Galway Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment in 1887. The competition was sponsored by Brooks for their fifth year of a partnership that started in 2020.

The 2024–25 All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship is the 20th staging of the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's intermediate inter-county club hurling tournament. The championship is scheduled to run from 26 October 2024 to January 2025.
