The Tyne, Trent and Tors gas fields are depleted natural gas reservoirs and former gas production facilities in the southern North Sea, centred around the Trent installation about 115 km east of Flamborough Head, Yorkshire. The fields produced gas from 1996 to 2020.

The fields

The Tyne, Trent and Tors (Kilmar and Garrow) gas fields are located in UK Offshore Blocks 44/18a, 43/24, 43/22a, 42/25a and 43/21a. Tyne and Trent are named after English rivers that flow into the North Sea. Kilmar and Garrow are named after Tors in Cornwall, and together were referred to as the Tors development. Development

The Tyne, Trent, Kilmar and Garrow gas fields were developed over the period 1996 to 2008. Gas was produced by five offshore installations, detailed in the table. [5] [6] [2] [1]

Gas export from Trent reused the 24” Esmond to Bacton pipeline (Esmond Transmission System) to the Bacton gas terminal, also known as EAGLES East Anglia Gas and Liquids Evacuation System pipeline.

Production

On the Tyne installation fluids from the wellheads were routed to the 3-phase Production Separator. The gas and condensate streams were metered then cojoined and sent to the pipeline to Trent. Separated water was metered and passed to the Produced Water Filter before disposal overboard. [7]

On Trent the fluids from Tyne were routed to a slug catcher then comingled with Trent gas from the Trent Production Separator. The combined gas stream was routed across the bridge to the TC platform. Here it passed successively to a Separator, LP Compressor, Cooler, Separator, HP Compressor, Cooler and Discharge Scrubber. The gas stream was routed back to the Production platform. Here it was dried by counter current contact with Tri-Ethylene Glycol before being sent to Bacton. [8]

Decommissioning

Perenco submitted a Decommissioning Programme for the Tyne installation to the UK Oil & Gas Authority in 2018. [9] This will entail plugging and abandoning the wells and removal of all structures above the sea bed. Following shutdown of the Trent platform in 2020 Alpha Petroleum announced the Kilmar and Garrow would be shutdown. [10]

Since 2016 gas from the Cygnus A complex has been routed via a 55 km 24" export pipeline to a tie-in on the Esmond Transmission System (ETS) and then to Bacton. [11]

Everest gasfield

The Everest gasfield is located in the Central North Sea, 233 kilometres (145 mi) east of Aberdeen, Scotland. It lies in the United Kingdom Continental Shelf blocks 22/9, 22/10a and 22/14a. The gasfield was discovered by Amoco in 1982 with first gas produced in 1993. Until 2009, the field was operated by BP. As a result of assets' swap between BP and BG Group in 2009, BG Group became the largest stakeholder of field with 80.46% interest and it took over operatorship of the field. Other partners beside of BG Group are Amerada Hess, and Total. The 1.0134% interest, which was owned by ConocoPhillips, was acquired by BG Group in 2007. On 1 November 2017 Chrysaor announced they had acquired a 100 per cent equity interest in the Everest Field, together with interests in the Beryl, Buzzard, Elgin-Franklin, Erskine, Armada, J Block, Lomond and Schiehallion fields.

"Offshore", when used in relation to hydrocarbons, refers to operations undertaken at, or under the, sea in association with an oil, natural gas or condensate field that is under the seabed, or to activities carried out in relation to such a field. Offshore is part of the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry.

Theddlethorpe Gas Terminal

Theddlethorpe Gas Terminal (TGT) is a former gas terminal on the Lincolnshire coast on Mablethorpe Road at Theddlethorpe St Helen close to Mablethorpe in East Lindsey in England. It is just off the A1031 and next door to a holiday camp and Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre.

Bacton Gas Terminal

The Bacton Gas Terminal is a complex of six gas terminals within four sites located on the North Sea coast of North Norfolk in the United Kingdom. The sites are near Paston and between Bacton and Mundesley; the nearest town is North Walsham.

The United Kingdom's National Transmission System (NTS) is the network of gas pipelines that supply gas to about forty power stations and large industrial users from natural gas terminals situated on the coast, and to gas distribution companies that supply commercial and domestic users. It covers Great Britain, i.e. England, Wales and Scotland.

The Hewett gas field is a large natural gas and associated condensate field located under the North Sea 19 miles off the Norfolk coast.

The Beryl oil field is a major crude oil production field in the UK sector of the northern North Sea, 335 km north east of Aberdeen. Production of oil started in 1976 and the field is still producing oil and gas (2021).

The Heather oil field is a significant crude oil producing field in the UK sector of the northern North Sea, 458 km north-north-east of Aberdeen. Production of oil started in 1978 and ceased in 2019, the Heather Alpha installation is currently (2021) undergoing decommissioning.

The Tartan oil field is a significant crude oil producing field in the UK sector of the North Sea, 187 km north-east of Aberdeen. Production of oil started in 1981 and ceased in 2020, the Tartan Alpha installation is currently (2021) undergoing decommissioning.

Ravenspurn gas fields

The Ravenspurn gas fields are two adjacent natural gas fields located in the UK sector of the southern North Sea about 65 km east of Flambrough Head, Yorkshire.

Esmond, Forbes and Gordon are three adjacent, now depleted, natural gas fields in the southern North Sea, 170 km east of Teesside.

The K13 gas fields were major natural gas producing fields in the Netherlands sector of the North Sea, about 130 km west of Den Helder. The fields started producing gas in 1975 but are no longer operational except for one installation used as a riser platform.

The Arthurian gas fields are small natural gas producing areas in the UK sector of the southern North Sea, their names are associated with the legend of King Arthur. The fields started gas production from 1989 and several are now depleted and have been decommissioned.

The Planets gas fields are small natural gas producing areas in the UK sector of the southern North Sea, their names are associated with the planets and moons of the solar system. The fields started gas production from 1995, although some have now (2021) ceased operation.

The Lincolnshire Offshore Gas Gathering System (LOGGS) was a major natural gas collection, processing and transportation complex in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. It comprised five bridge-linked platforms about 118 km east of the Lincolnshire coast, which operated from 1988 to 2018. 

The Caister Murdoch System (CMS) was a major natural gas collection, processing and transportation system in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. It comprised 11 platforms, 8 subsea wellhead completions and interconnecting pipelines centered about 155 km east of Flamborough Head Yorkshire. It operated from 1993 to 2018.

The Pickerill and Juliet gas fields are decommissioned natural gas producing facilities in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. The fields are located about 66 km (41 mi) east of Spurn Head, Lincolnshire. Pickerill was in operation from 1992 until 2018 and Juliet from 2014 to 2018.

The Thames gas field is a depleted natural gas reservoir and former gas production facility in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. The field is located about 80 km north east of Bacton, Norfolk; the Thames production facility was in operation from 1986 until 2014.

The Greater Markham Area gas fields are natural gas reservoirs and gas production facilities that straddled, or are close to, the UK and Netherlands median line of the southern North Sea. The UK field production facilities, which export gas to the Netherlands, began operation in 1992.

The Clipper gas field is a major natural gas reservoir and gas production facility in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. The field is located about 73 km north-north-east of Bacton, Norfolk; the Clipper production facility has operated since 1990.
